Compass Calibration for the inReach Explorer or inReach Explorer+

In order to keep the electronic compass in an inReach Explorer® or inReach Explorer®+ satellite communicator accurate, it needs to be calibrated regularly.

At a minimum, it is recommended to calibrate the compass at first use, after moving more than 100 miles (160 km), or after experiencing a temperature change greater than 68° F (20° C) since the last calibration. To ensure the compass is always working properly, you may want to calibrate right before using the device.

Tips

  • Calibrate the compass outside.

  • Ensure you hold the device parallel to the ground when you start calibrating.

  • Magnetic fields (such as vehicles, buildings, etc.) can cause poor compass readings, and also interfere with calibrating.

Calibrating the Compass

  1. Select Settings from the main menu.

  2. Select Compass & Altimeter.

  3. Select Calibrate Compass.

  4. Turn all six sides of the device to face the ground by slowly rotating the device on its side, then rotating bottom to top.

Continue rotating the device in this manner until the calibration completes.

Once the calibration has been completed successfully, the device will beep and a message will appear.
