Internet Connection Restrictions that can Prevent the Successful Download of Maps
Garmin offers a variety of downloadable maps for purchase and GPS devices that include subscriptions to downloadable map updates. Prior to downloading these maps, it is recommended to verify that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) does not restrict your Internet service in a manner that will prevent or unnecessarily delay the completion of the download. Here are some factors that can cause issues downloading the maps:
Internet Connection Speed
Garmin's content delivery service can handle very fast Internet connections. The download speed of new content is limited to the download speed of the Internet connection. DSL, Cable, or other high-speed Internet connections are recommended. Mobile broadband (such as MiFi, AirCard, or cell phone tethering), satellite, fixed wireless, and dial-up Internet connections are not supported.
Steps can be taken to improve the download speed while downloading a map product:
Disable any third-party security software on the computer
Close any other downloads that may be running in other programs
Refrain from streaming online videos or music
If after following these steps there is an issue with a map download taking longer than expected, contact your ISP to verify that the Internet connection is downloading at the appropriate rate.
Data Caps / Data Restrictions
Many of Garmin's downloadable map products are several gigabytes (GB) in size. Some ISPs will place a limit on how much data may be downloaded during a daily or monthly cycle. Depending on the ISP, exceeding this limit could result in reduced Internet performance or fees for the additional data used. To find out whether your Internet service is capped or restricted, contact your ISP.
The amount of data required by Garmin downloadable maps and updates can be viewed using the applicable steps below:
Downloadable Maps
To check the file size and the data requirements when downloading a purchased map on most downloads:
1. Go to the Garmin website www.garmin.com
2. Select a market
3. Select a map category under Maps
4. Shop for and select the desired map
5. When the desired map is selected, click on the Requirements tab (on most map downloads)
- The download requirements and file Information (file size) will appear
Map Updates
- See the Garmin Express web page for system requirements and to download the program
- For specific map update file sizes, open Garmin Express and connect a device
- Click View Details before updating the device to view the file sizes
Bandwidth Management (Throttling, Fair Use)
Some ISPs employ bandwidth management techniques to ensure that heavy users of the network do not negatively affect the service of other users. This is especially common on mobile broadband ISPs (ISPs that deliver service through a network of cellular towers). This type of bandwidth management may cause Garmin applications to lose connection to the server, or may simply cause the download to take an unreasonably long time. To determine whether your ISP uses these techniques, contact your ISP.
To avoid these issues, use an Internet connection that is not subject to these limitations or policies to download Garmin products.
Virtual Private Network/Proxy Settings
If applicable, disable any VPN (Virtual Private Network) that is in use. If this is not possible, use a different computer and/or network connection.
Incorrectly configured proxy and/or LAN settings may affect the connection between the Internet and Garmin Express. See Verify the Proxy Settings are Correct on a Computer
