Calibrating the Pace and Distance Feature on a HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro Plus
Running pace and distance accuracy on HRM-Pro™ or HRM-Pro Plus™ monitors will improve with calibration. It typically takes 2 hours of outdoor running to calibrate, though the accuracy will continue to improve the more you run outside. There are two ways to calibrate your strap which both require you to have the strap paired to a compatible watch:
NOTE: Calibration information is saved on the HRM monitor. Calibration information is preserved during software updates and during battery changes.
Auto Calibration
Occurs automatically whenever you run outside with the presence of GPS with your strap. To get the best possible auto calibration, make sure your outdoor runs cover the same range of paces as you typically run on the treadmill.
Auto calibration will NOT occur under these conditions:
Running indoors
Running outdoors using the Trail Run or Ultra Run activity profiles
Using a foot pod sensor during your run
Terrain you are running on is very hilly
If Auto Calibrate is set to OFF under the HRM Pace & Dist. Settings
If Use for Pace is set to Always, under the HRM Pace & Dist Settings
Manual Calibration
Manually calibrating allows you to tune the pace and distance calculation on your HRM specifically for treadmill running. At the end of a treadmill run that was a minimum of 1.0 miles recorded on the watch, select Calibrate and Save in the menu that appears when you stop the timer on your watch. Enter the treadmill distance and save.
If you want to use the HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro Plus for your pace source all the time, it is recommended that you:
Start with setting Use for Pace to Indoors, under the HRM Pace & Dist Settings.
Accumulate about 2 hours of running across your typical pace ranges.
This does not need to be done all in one session.
Then switch the Use for Pace setting to Always.
Accuracy Tips
Tips below require the HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro Plus to be paired and connected to your watch.
Best accuracy is typically achieved by doing several outdoor runs followed by a manual calibration.
Manual calibration can be done following a treadmill run by selecting Calibrate and Save and entering the distance displayed on the treadmill.
Outdoor run activities should cover the same range of paces as you typically run on the treadmill. Auto Calibrate should be set to On.
From your watch go to your sensors menu and select the HRM > HRM Pace & Distance > Auto Calibrate > On.
Outdoor run activities where the terrain affects your running form, such as sand or deep snow, should have Auto Calibrate set to Off.
From your watch go to your sensors menu and select the HRM > HRM Pace & Distance > Auto Calibrate > Off.
If you are not getting desired accuracy, consider resetting the calibration data. This will reset both the auto calibration and the manual calibration.
From your watch go to your sensors menu and select the HRM > HRM Pace & Distance > Reset Calibration Data.
If you are satisfied with the accuracy of the pace and distance from the HRM, consider turning the Auto Calibrate setting off. HRM > HRM Pace & Distance > Auto Calibrate > Off.
For some runners, using only the manual calibration may be the best option. For this, you will need to perform the following steps.
Reset the calibration data under the sensors menu on your watch. HRM > HRM Pace & Distance > Reset Calibration Data.
Turn Auto Calibrate to Off under the sensors menu on your watch. HRM > HRM Pace & Distance > Auto Calibrate > Off.
At the end of your next treadmill run, enter the treadmill distance when prompted.
