Enlarging the Mounting Holes for Securing the Garmin Force Kraken Mount with Four Bolts
Due to the shape of some vessels, it is not always possible to utilize the front set of mounting holes closest to the U-shaped opening of the mount:
While it is possible to utilize only the four hole positions closest to the foot lever, there are some very important considerations if you choose to do so:
You must utilize 5/16” bolts but no larger than that. Early versions of the mount provided ¼” bolts and holes, and was designed to utilize all six points to secure the mount. If the mount did not ship with 5/16” bolts and mounting holes out of box, then you must drill out the holes larger to accommodate. Larger bolts and nuts will be available as a service kit but can also be purchased locally, if preferred.
If choosing to create larger holes, utilize an 11/32th metal drill bit. Do not go any larger. Using bolts larger than 5/16th will have heads too large to clear the side of the mount.
If choosing to drill out larger holes, you must first disconnect the power and data cables from the ebox to secure them out of the way, and then remove the ebox from the mount. This is necessary to reduce the risk of damage to the components from the drill. Any damage to components that occurs as a result of drilling, will void the warranty.
If you have any concerns about your ability to perform this adjustment, contact a Certified Garmin Installer.
Those that wish to opt against making this alteration can purchase a Quick Release Plate System to accommodate this type of installation. The base plate which attaches to the vessel is able to sit further forward and can provide the clearance needed to install the Force Kraken to the deck.
