Garmin Explore App Guest Device

The Guest Device feature in the Garmin Explore app allows users with an active inReach subscription to share or lend their inReach device1 to others without changing any of their settings in their personal Garmin Explore app account. The lendee is then able to use their own Garmin Explore account to sync waypoints and routes to the device.

If the handheld is showing as a Guest Device unintentionally (in the Devices section of the app), this can be resolved by signing out of the app and signing back in.

Signing Out and Signing Back Into the Garmin Explore App

  1. Open the Garmin Explore app.
  2. Select Head and Shoulders Icon.
  3. Select Sign Out.
  4. Sign back into the app using the same email address that was used when initially activating the inReach.
  5. Follow the prompts to add the device in the app.

IMPORTANT: All inReach services from the borrowed or shared device are still attached to the Garmin Explore account of the lender. All inReach subscription charges will continue to go to the account of the lender. The inReach handheld cannot be paired with more than one phone at a time. A data connection is needed to sign in to any new accounts and pair the device to a different phone. Any additional Search And Rescue (SAR) coverage applies to the account owner and does not cover the lendee. The lendee will have to purchase or use their own benefit coverage. For more details and purchase options, visit - SAR Insurance.

inReach Service Features for a Shared Guest Device

  • Messages & Message History - Will appear to be sent from the lender's account. The lender's Garmin Explore account will keep these messages.

    • Quick Text - Not available.
    • inReach Contacts - Not available (lendee's phone contacts are still available under System Contacts).
  • MapShare - Will appear under the lender's Garmin Explore account MapShare when Tracking is used.
  • inReach Weather Reports - Lender's previous weather reports will appear on the lendee's device and Garmin Explore app account.
  • SOS - Will appear from the lender's Garmin Explore account, but Garmin Response is notified it is a guest device so they are aware it has been borrowed.
