Outdoor Handheld Fails to Sync Successfully Using Garmin Express

If Garmin Express fails to sync with an outdoor handheld that communicates through a USB data cable, follow the troubleshooting steps below:

  1. Ensure that Garmin Express is up to date (see Updating the Garmin Express Application Software)
  2. If Garmin Express states that the device is not connected, follow the troubleshooting information in the following FAQ: 
  3. Ensure that the software is up to date on the Garmin outdoor handheld device (see Installing Software Updates to Outdoor/Marine Handhelds)
  4. If there is no Sync button available, check the Upload Preferences in Garmin Express to ensure that consent has been given to upload data to Garmin Connect:
    1. Select your device
    2. Select Tools & Content
    3. Select the Privacy tab
    4. Select Change Upload Preferences
  5. If Garmin Express displays a server error, follow the troubleshooting information in the following FAQ:  Garmin Express Displays a Server Error Message
  6. If there are corrupt files on the device, Garmin Express may display the error Some files could not be uploaded to Garmin Connect as shown below:

    If this error occurs, proceed with the following steps:
    1. Manually Upload all of the activities from the device to Garmin Connect. For instructions, see -  How Do I Manually Upload an Activity I Recorded to Garmin Connect?
    2. Delete the activity files from the device. For instructions, see -  Removing Recorded Activities to Free Up Space on a Garmin Fitness Device
    3. Clear the upload history in Garmin Express:
      1. Select Tools & Content
      2. Select Utilities
      3. Scroll down to "Clear Upload History" and select Clear History
      4. Select Continue
