What do the SAR Insurance plans cover?
Search and Rescue (SAR) Insurance plans offer financial reimbursement for qualified search and rescue related expenses incurred during the rescue of the individual covered by the plan. SAR insurance coverage requires the use of a Garmin Response supported device with an active subscription to report an emergency that warrants search and rescue to Garmin Response. Reimbursement coverage is based on the selected SAR plan. https://www.iercc.com/en-US/supported-devices/
What does SAR High Risk cover that SAR 100 doesn't?
Both SAR High Risk and SAR 100 include $100,000 USD in coverage, but SAR High Risk does not have any excluded activities. SAR 100 excluded activities include: BASE jumping, cliff diving, sole free diving, fly-by-wire, free climbing (without ropes); hang gliding, paragliding, heli-skiing & heli-snowboarding, wingsuit flying, mountain climbing - (with intent to go above 5,000m), skydiving (including skysurfing).
What policy do I need if I am going to climb over 5,000 meters?
SAR High Risk is the only policy that will cover you if you are climbing over 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) Ex: Climbing in Nepal at basecamp or above would require SAR High Risk.
What devices can be used with these policies?
All devices monitored by Garmin Response. For a complete list visit https://www.iercc.com/en-US/supported-devices/
Are the policies per device or per person?
A policy only covers the individual person who the policy was purchased for. A device can be used by multiple people.
Is this travel insurance?
This is not a travel insurance. This policy helps to cover resource costs related to a Garmin Response coordinated search and rescue for a covered person.
Do I need to have a policy to be rescued?
No, you do not need to have a SAR policy to be rescued. For the IERCC to be alerted and initiate a rescue response, you must activate an SOS on a Garmin Response supported device https://www.iercc.com/en-US/supported-devices/ that has an active monitoring plan. Only the covered person will receive benefit and coverage from the SAR policy.
How many people can I cover with a policy?
Each policy only covers the person it was purchased for. Additional policies must be purchased for each individual wishing to have coverage.
Does this policy have restrictions against pre-existing conditions?
There are no pre-existing condition restrictions on the policy.
Should I have any other insurance to use with this policy?
You must file with your primary form of insurance first before filing a claim with this policy.
Are There any countries that my SAR insurance will not cover me?
Garmin IERCC will still attempt to coordinate the emergency response anywhere in the world but there are certain countries that you will not be able to utilize your SAR insurance. Countries in which search and rescue expenses will not be made reimbursed: Afghanistan, Belarus, Chechnya, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) and Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR) regions of Ukraine, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, Syria, West Bank, Gaza Strip, Crimea, Sudan and any other country or territory that is or becomes subject to a United States or United Kingdom government embargo, or that has been or is designated by the United States or United Kingdom government as a terrorist supporting country.
I used to be able to purchase SAR 50 but don't see it as an option any longer, is there any way I can get this coverage?
No, this option is only available to users who were enrolled in the SAR 50 Member Benefits option through Garmin. This option is no longer available for new purchases.
I previously had a SAR 50 Membership Benefit through Garmin, how does this new SAR 50 insurance policy differ?
The new insurance product will still give you $50,000 USD in coverage per incident, with up to $100,000 USD per year. The major difference is that the SAR 50 insurance product WILL exclude mountain climbing with the intent to go over 5,000 meters (16,404 feet). The new insurance product is an AD&D policy with a rider for Search and Rescue. To see the complete list of exclusions and what the new product offers please review the Certificate of Insurance.
How much is a rescue? What does a rescue cost?
The cost of a search and rescue has many factors. We cannot estimate how much a rescue would cost an individual. We recommend reaching out to resources in the area you will be traveling for information regarding potential rescue costs.
If I activate an SOS on my IERCC supported device for someone else. will the person be covered under my SAR plan?
The policy is intended for the Covered Person; defined as “any insured for whom the required premium is paid”. If an SOS is activated for a third party, the third party will be responsible for their search and rescue costs.
