Route Calculation Error on an Outdoor Handheld

When attempting to navigate to a destination on an outdoor handheld, you may encounter a route calculation error if the maps installed on the handheld do not support turn-by-turn routable roads and trails. The sections below will help to resolve this error:

  • If you wish to use turn-by-turn routing, refer to Setting Up Turn-by-Turn Routing below for items to consider.
  • If you do not wish to use turn-by-turn navigation, refer to Changing the Handheld to Direct Routing below.

Setting Up Turn-By-Turn Routing

If on-road or on-trail routing is desired, the handheld needs a routable map product installed. With a routable map such as TOPO U.S. 24K or TopoActive, the handheld will use the roads and/or trails that appear on the map to calculate a turn-by-turn route to the destination.

To perform turn-by-turn routing, use the following checklist to ensure all requirements are met and settings are configured correctly.

Does My Handheld Have a Pre-Loaded Routable Map?

To confirm, here is a list of handhelds that come pre-loaded with routable maps:
  • eTrex® 22x and eTrex® 32x
  • GPSMAP® 276Cx Automotive Bundle
  • GPSMAP® 64x, 64sx, and 64scx
  • GPSMAP® 65 and GPSMAP® 65s
  • GPSMAP® 66sr and GPSMAP® 66i
  • GPSMAP® 67 and GPSMAP® 67i
  • Montana® 700i and Montana® 750i

Have I Purchased and Installed a Routable Map?

To check, here is a list of routable maps available for purchase you can install to your handheld:

City Navigator®, HuntView Plus, and TOPO U.S. 24K maps can be purchased as a download or preloaded microSD card. TopoActive maps can only be purchased as a download. For help downloading a purchased map, see: Downloading a Purchased Map with Garmin Express™ for an Outdoor Handheld. For help installing a preloaded microSD card map, see: Installing a microSD card into an Outdoor or Marine Handheld Device.

NOTE: TopoActive mapping supports turn-by-turn routing, but not when in an Automotive profile. Turn-by-turn routing can be used under certain supported activities. For more information, see: Coverage and Features of Preloaded TopoActive Maps

Important Settings for Turn-by-Turn Routing

To perform turn-by-turn routing, go to Setup > Routing on your handheld and ensure the following settings are configured:
    • Direct Routing should be turned Off.
      • Some handhelds have this listed as one of the Activity options rather than an individual setting.
      • For handhelds that do not have Direct Routing, ensure Guidance Method is set to one of the On Road options.
    • Activity or Calculate Routes for should be set to one of the following options based on the type of travel you will be doing.
NOTE: These options vary by model and your handheld may not include all of these options.
      • ATV/Off Road Driving
      • Automobile Driving1
      • Bicycle
      • Car/Motorcycle1
      • Cycling
      • Hiking
      • Mountain Biking
      • Motorcycle Driving1
      • Mountaineering
      • Pedestrian
      • Pedestrian Walking
      • Tour Cycling
    • Lock On Road should be enabled.

1 Requires City Navigator, HuntView Plus, or TOPO U.S. 24K. Turn-by-turn routing is not available for these profiles when using TopoActive maps. The TopoActive mapping is based on OSM (OpenStreetMaps) that have not been verified safe for automotive driving.

Changing the Handheld to Direct Routing

Certain map products, such as the preloaded Worldwide DEM Basemap or TOPO U.S. 100K, do not support turn-by-turn routing. If only these maps are installed, the handheld's routing or activity settings must be set to Direct Routing or Off Road for the route to calculate successfully. The handheld will then navigate in a straight line to the destination, or provide straight lines between waypoints if there are multiple waypoints in the route.

The routing settings can be found in Setup > Routing. For more details, refer to "Routing Settings" in your owner's manual.
