Updating a Fusion® Stereo or Remote
Each software update for a Fusion® stereo contains quality of life improvements and measures to prevent interruptions in a user's experience. Software updates are usually the first and often the last step in troubleshooting a Fusion stereo. Some older stereos must be updated via a USB storage device, however most current stereos can be updated via the Fusion® Audio app by a USB connection to an Apple iPhone. Wi-Fi capable stereos can be updated wirelessly via the Fusion® Audio app.
Updating a stereo with the Fusion Audio app is going to be the fastest and simplest method, needing:
- A Fusion Audio-compatible stereo able to receive wireless updates and on software version 5.70 or newer
- An iOS or Android smartphone or tablet
- A reliable connection to Wi-Fi or cellular service
Updating a stereo with USB storage is more involved than using the Fusion Audio app but may be necessary due to circumstances or the model of stereo being used, needing:
- The stereo to be connected to power
- A blank USB storage device formatted in FAT32 with a capacity of at least 4gb and no more than 32gb
- A computer with internet connection
To update with the Fusion Audio app
- Set the stereo as a Wireless Access Point or enable Bluetooth Discoverable mode according to the owner's manual
- Connect the smart device being used to the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signal now being cast by the stereo
- Open Fusion Audio on the smart device and select the stereo to be updated
- Select Settings
- Select General > Software Update
- The Fusion Audio app will recognize that there are updates available. Reconnect the smart device to home Wi-Fi or cellular data
- Open the Fusion Audio app and select Settings
- Select Check for Updates
- Select the stereo to be updated from the list
- When the download completes, connect the phone to the stereo's Wi-Fi or via USB
- Select Ready to Send
- Allow the update to transfer to the stereo from the phone. This will take several minutes and the stereo will not show any sign of being updated. Do not power off the stereo or close out of the app
- When the update is done sending, the stereo will begin applying the update and show a percentage bar. When finished, the stereo will restart and the update will be complete
To update with a USB storage device
- Insert the blank USB storage device with a capacity of at least 4gb and no more than 32gb into the computer
- Navigate to https://www.garmin.com/c/marine/fusion-audio-entertainment/
- Select Stereos
- Select the model of stereo to be updated. The MS-RA770 is used in this example
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Software
- Select Download and save the file to a location on the computer that can easily be found such as the desktop
- Open the zipped folder that was downloaded and move the Garmin folder onto the USB storage device
The Garmin folder is the only thing that should be on the USB storage device - Insert the USB storage device into the USB port of the stereo while the stereo is turned on
- Start the update on the stereo
- On Apollo series stereos, select
Menu > Settings > Update > Stereo / Head Unit / Update Software
- On Apollo series stereos, select
- The stereo will display a progress bar and a completion percentage
- When finished, the stereo will restart and the update will be complete
