Minimum and Maximum Password Lengths for Wi-Fi Networks

When connecting to a Wireless Network on your automotive device, if the network is password protected it must be at least 8 characters in length. The maximum length is listed below and depends on the type of network.

If your network password is less than 8 characters, the easiest workaround is to change your network password to meet this minimum requirement.

The Wi-Fi network connection on your automotive device would have to be set up manually if you wish to retain a password under this limit.

To Manually Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

  1. Open the device's Settings menu  or overlander settings icon
  2. Touch Wi-Fi
  3. Touch the Menu button
    • Three vertical dots in the top right corner
  4. Touch Add network
    • NOTE: Hidden networks are not compatible with Wi-Fi updates on some Garmin devices.
  5. Enter the SSID for your network
    • Check the documentation for your router if you are unsure how to find this
    • Maximum length is 32 characters
  6. Scroll down and touch Security
  7. Select the security type your network is using
    • Check your router's network security settings if you are unsure of what setting to choose
    • WEP - Maximum key length is 16 characters
    • WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK - Maximum key length is 63 characters
  8. Scroll down and touch Password
  9. Enter the password for your network and touch Save

The device will now be connected to your home Wi-Fi network.
