Engaging the TR-1 Autopilot and the motor immediately goes hard over

There are a few different reasons the motor goes hard over as soon as the autopilot is engaged. Below are some troubleshooting suggestions that could assist in resolving the issue.

Please be sure the hydraulic hoses are not reversed. To check this, please follow these instructions:

  1. Power ON the Autopilot
  2. Press the Standby button to make sure its LED is lit
  3. Press the Setup button
  4. Enter [Code 249 for Gladiator] or [Code 259 for Gold]
  5. If the Down arrow button is lit, press the Up arrow button. If the Up arrow button is lit, press the Down arrow button

Once the hoses have been reversed with code, the changes will need to be downloaded into the permanent memory of the TR-1 Autopilot. Please follow these steps to download into memory:

  1. With the Setup LED lit, press and hold the GPS Select Load button
  2. While holding the GPS Select Load button, press and release the Deckmount On/Off button
  3. Release the GPS Select Load button

The information will now be downloaded to the internal memory of the TR-1 Autopilot.

If the boat still goes hard over as soon as the autopilot is engaged, the next step is to check the installation of the compass ball. Ensure the compass ball is mounted securely in its bracket and that the cables coming out of the compass ball are pointing straight down.  This ensures that the compass is level and has the best opportunity to read accurately.

It is also important that no electromagnetic interference near the compass ball exists. The easiest way to check for interference is by using a handheld compass and holding it near the compass ball. If the handheld compass shows signs of interference, this would also affect the compass ball and it would be advisable to either remount the compass ball in a new location or remove the source of the interference.
