Glossary of Terms Used For the Tread® Audio System
Below are some terms describing the capabilities and specifications of the Tread® Audio System.
OHM
Is a standard unit of electrical resistance. Ohms as it pertains to speakers is the unit of resistance measures across the voice coil terminals and will determine the amount of power an amplifier can produce. Generally, the lower the Ohm load or impedance, the more power an amplifier can produce. This will also cause the amplifier to create more heat.
Amplifier
An electronic device for increasing the amplitude of electrical signals, used chiefly in sound reproduction.
Voice Coil
The coil of wire that drives the speaker.
THD
Total Harmonic Distortion. The lower the THD in a piece of equipment, the more accurate the reproduction of sound.
Frequency Response
The ability of a device to handle the frequencies applied to it.
RMS
RMS = Root Mean Square: The amount of continuous power that an amplifier produces, measured in watts. The RMS power on your amp should always match the RMS power rating on your subwoofer and speakers. The higher the RMS rating, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.
Class D Amplifier
Class D amplifiers are designed to increase efficiency and power output while using less current than other non class D amps.
Tweeter
Tweeters reproduce high-range frequencies. In two and three way speakers the tweeter is mounted in the center of the cone on a pole piece, and are a separate unit on component speakers. Tweeters are ideally placed equidistant to the listener's ears.
