Disengaging the Garmin Shadow Drive
The GHP Autopilot systems will still function without a Shadow Drive installed. However, for a vessel with an uninstalled shadow drive unit, the autopilot will not disengage if the boater turns the helm. Instead, the Standby button will need to be pressed on the GHC autopilot screen to disable the autopilot. Another consideration is that if not installed, the user will need to disable the Shadow Drive through the GHC menu or a Garmin chartplotter.
Disabling the Shadow Drive with a GHC Display
From the Heading Page of the GHC display select, Menu > Setup > Users Autopilot Setup > Shadow Drive > set to Disabled.
Disabling the Shadow Drive with a compatible Garmin Chartplotter1
Press the Home button select Autopilot > Options > Autopilot Setup > Shadow Drive Setup > Disable.
1Compatible Legacy chartplotters have different menu steps; see owner's manual for unit specific directions. Finding the Owner's Manual for a Garmin Device
Garmin highly recommends installing the Shadow Drive valve in the GHP Autopilot to ensure safe operation of the autopilot. For more information on installing the Shadow Drive valve. consult the autopilot installation manual.
