Verify the Device is Getting Power

 1. Plug your device into the vehicle with its original Garmin vehicle power cable, pictured here:

2. Turn the vehicle's power on
3. Check the light on the vehicle end of the power cable and make sure it is lit

    • If the power cable does not light up, try a different vehicle

4. Drive normally with the device connected to power for at least 10 minutes

The device should power on after taking these steps.

Reset the Device

If the device still does not power on, or if the screen has become frozen and will not power off, a soft reset can help by forcing the device to reboot.

To Perform a Soft Reset:

  1. Connect the device to a power source with its Vehicle Power Cable.
    • An A/C adapter may also be used, but if the problem persists, the Vehicle Power Adapter will need to be used.
  2. Press and hold the power button or hold the power switch in the "on" position, and slowly count to 30.

The device should now turn on. Leave the device connected to power to give the battery time to charge.

Why is This Happening?

An issue where your Garmin device will not turn on, is frozen, has a dead battery, or has a black screen can have several different causes:

Dead Battery

  • A device will not turn on if it has an empty or "dead" battery.
  • This can be resolved by charging the battery, but this is not always as simple as connecting the device to any cable or power source.

Environment

Software Problem

  • If the device "freezes" on a single screen and will not respond to your touch, the device may have run into a software "bug", "glitch", or other similar types of problems.
  • Since all electronic devices do a large number of tasks and calculations every second, it is always possible for the device to get stuck at one point or another while in use.
  • This problem may be solved with a software update. See the applicable FAQ below for instructions:
