"Runtime Error" or "Application Failed to Start" Errors in Garmin Applications

Runtime or Application errors can occur for a number of reasons ranging from hardware problems to missing Windows components.  This does not apply to Mac.

These Errors Will Display as:

  • Runtime Error.

  • This Application failed to Start.

To Resolve this:

  • Make sure the computer meets the application's minimum system requirements.
  • Install the latest update for the Garmin application from Garmin Applications: Updates and Downloads.
  • Install any needed Windows operating system updates.
  • For Garmin Express, install the Update for Visual C++ 2013 and Visual C++ Redistributable Package linked here Visual C++ Redistributable.
    • Different Garmin applications may require different versions.  Refer to the requirements for the application to determine which C++ component is required.

1. Scroll down to the x86 File Path.

2. Choose the appropriate language link. See example:

3. Select the vcredist_x86.exe download when prompted.

After completing these suggestions, the error should be corrected.

Additional Troubleshooting

If Garmin Express fails to start after installing the Update for Visual C++ 2013 and Visual C++ Redistributable Package linked above, it is possible that the version you already have installed is newer than what Garmin Express requires and it is not allowing an older version to be installed.  In order to resolve this, please try the following:

  1. Open Apps & Features on your Windows computer.
  2. Write down the versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installed.
  3. Uninstall any version of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable * THAT IS HIGHER THAN 14.23.27820 * from Apps & Features (or Uninstall or Change a Program).  Note that the version 14.23.27820 itself can remain.
  4. Run the upgrade or the new install of Garmin Express.
  5. Open Garmin Express.

If the above fails, another computer will need to be used, or you may seek further assistance from a Microsoft certified repair technician.

OPTIONAL:  IF you find you need the higher versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable that you uninstalled in Step 3, you can download and install from the Microsoft website here:  Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable x86
