Installing Maps on an Edge Without an SD Card

To install a supplemental or purchased map region to an Edge® cycling computer without an SD card, you will first need to remove the built-in map.

NOTICE: Refer to Managing Maps on Garmin Devices With Garmin Express if you have the following Edge Cycling Computers:
  • Edge® 540 | Edge® 540 Solar

  • Edge® 840 | Edge® 840 Solar

  • Edge® 1030 Plus 

  • Edge® 1040 | Edge® 1040 Solar

  • Edge® 1050

  • Edge® Explore 2

For specific instructions, select your operating system below:


Windows

IMPORTANT: Do not delete any files other than the recommended .img, .gma, .sum, and .unl files; deleting necessary files from the device can cause adverse performance issues. Your device may not have all of the files listed below, but if they are present do not delete them.

  1. Plug the device into a computer.

  2. Press Windows key + E.

  3. Select This PC (Windows 10 only).

  4. Open the Garmin device drive.

  5. Open the GARMIN folder.

  6. Select all .img, .gma, .sum, and .unl files.

    • DO NOT delete the gmapbmap.img.

  7. Press Delete on the keyboard.

  8. Confirm to delete the selected files.

  9. Eject the device from the computer.

  10. Unplug the device from the computer to allow the device to apply the changes.

I Am Unable to Locate Any Image Files

If you are unable to find any of the files that are listed above you may have the file extensions hidden and will need to change the setting to show these file extensions.

  1. Select View on the top bar.

  2. Select the image above Options.

  3. Select View.

  4. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.

  5. Select OK.

You should now be able to see the image files that you need to delete. 


Mac

  1. Plug the device into the computer.

  2. Open Finder.

  3. Select Go in the menu bar.

  4. Select Computer.

  5. Open the Garmin device drive.

  6. Open the GARMIN folder.

  7. Select all .img.gma, .sum, and .unl files and drag the files to trash.

    • DO NOT delete gmapbmap.img.

  8. Empty the Trash.

  9. Eject the device from the computer.

  10. Unplug the device from the computer to allow the device to apply the changes.


Instructions to Install the New Maps

After removing the preloaded map files, you will need to plug the device back into the computer and return to the Garmin Express™ program to install the newly purchased map:

  1. Launch Garmin Express.

    • Windows: Either double-click the express icon in the system tray (next to the time), double-click the shortcut on the desktop, or search for Garmin Express in the Start menu.

    • Mac: Garmin Express can be found in the Applications folder in Finder.

  2. Select the desired device.

  3. Select Tools & Content.

  4. Select the Purchased tab.

  5. Select the cloud icon Icon of a cloud with a downward pointing arrow to download the map.

    • If you do not see your maps listed, you may need to select Sign In.


Can I Reinstall the Maps That Came With My Device?

If you later wish to switch back to the maps that originally came with your device, you will need to repeat the steps above to remove the maps on the device then reinstall the original maps following these steps:

  1. Launch Garmin Express.

    • Windows: Either double-click the express icon in the system tray (next to the time), double-click the shortcut on the desktop, or search for Garmin Express in the Start menu.

    • Mac: Garmin Express can be found in the Applications folder in Finder.

  2. Select the desired device.

    • The option to install the map will be available after this step on some Edge models.

  3. Select Map Details.

  4. Select Map Options.

  5. Select Reinstall Map.
