Troubleshooting Missed Shots on the Approach R50

The Approach® R50 launch monitor uses three high-speed cameras to analyze several metrics like your club path, launch angle, ball speed, and estimated distances and direction. If your Approach R50 is missing shots or if metrics appear inaccurate see below for recommendations.

Approach R50 Placement

When selecting a location for the launch monitor for a virtual round or practice mode session, you should observe these considerations:

  • Place the launch monitor approximately 1.5 ft. (0.5 m) to the side of the tee location.

  • The launch monitor must face the tee location.

  • Place the launch monitor at approximately the same height as the tee location.

  • You must have a hitting space or mat at least 2 feet long by 2 feet wide.

  • Ensure you can take a full swing comfortably in your hitting space.

Factors Impacting Shot Detection

The list below contains factors that may impact the Approach R50's ability to detect shots:

  • Reflective surfaces such as a finished garage floor may impact the Approach R50's ability to detect the ball. Using a golf mat can help to minimize these reflections and improve accuracy.

  • If your shoes or socks have reflective materials you may need to cover the reflective parts or try wearing a different pair.

  • Some pre-swing movements or pauses mid-swing may result in false detection or a missed shot. Using proper form and a steady tempo in your swing will help ensure shots are not missed.

  • If you are using a golf mat that is a similar color to your golf ball, the Approach R50's cameras may have trouble detecting the ball. To avoid this we suggest using a golf mat and ball that are different colors to help the Approach R50 clearly detect your ball.

  • Using plastic, foam, or other types of limited flight golf balls can lead to inconsistent, incorrect, or no metrics being displayed by the launch monitor. We suggest using the same type of regulation golf ball that you would use at the course to receive the most accurate measurements.
