Garmin Chartplotter not Communicating With an AIS
Try the following troubleshooting steps if a Garmin Marine Chartplotter does not communicate with an AIS receiver.
The first troubleshooting step verifies that the wiring is correct. Are the devices connected over NMEA 0183 High Speed or NMEA 2000? Review each device's Installation Manual to find the appropriate wiring and verify the connection.
Second, verify that the communications port setting is on NMEA high speed if installation is via NMEA 0183.
Follow these instructions to change this setting on current GPSMAP devices: From any page press, Options > Communications > NMEA 0183 Setup > Port Types - select the port the AIS receiver connects to > Select NMEA High Speed.
Lastly, update the chartplotter's internal software version. Verify that the device is up to date. If the device is found to be out of date, review Related Content below for software update instructions.
