Tacx NEO and NEO 2 Bearing Replacement Instructions

NOTE: These instructions are for a Type 1 axle Tacx NEO series trainer. Some NEO 2 trainers are a type 2 axle. If this is the case for your trainer refer to the instructions found in Tacx NEO 2T Bearing Replacement Instructions.

This content provides detailed information on the process of replacing the bearing assembly for your Tacx® NEO and Tacx® NEO 2 Smart Trainer.

Tools Needed

  • 4 mm Allen key

  • 5 mm Allen key

  • 24 mm wrench

  • Hammer

  • 2"x2" piece of thick cardboard or wood block

  • Large bath towel or blanket

Below are step by step instructions followed by a how-to video on this process.

Step 1: Remove Cassette Body

  1. Use the 5 mm Allen key to remove the end cap (turning it counter-clockwise) that secures the cassette body.

  2. Slide the cassette body off the axle.

  3. Remove the black ring off the axle.

Step 2: Remove Disc From Trainer

  1. Start by using a 4 mm Allen key to remove three bolts in the fashion shown below:

  2. Install the extractor tool securing it to the disc by using the bolts you removed as shown below:

  3. Using the 24 mm wrench, tighten the bolt on the extractor which will slowly draw the disc outward. Continue to tighten the bolt until you are able to slide the disc off of the axle.

Step 3: Remove Extractor Tool and Remaining Bolts From Disc

  1. Loosen the extractor bolt using the 24 mm wrench. You will need to loosen it enough so that you can place the extractor on a solid surface and the bolt does not touch the surface.

  2. Using the 4 mm Allen key, remove the bolts from the extractor and the remaining bolts from the disc. The disc should appear like the image below:

Step 4: Remove Bearing Assembly From Disc

  1. Place the extractor tool on a solid surface like a workbench or table. Then place the disc on top of the extractor tool like shown below:

  2. Wrap a towel or blanket around the extractor tool in order to protect the surface as the disc may fall from the bearing assembly in the next step.

  3. Using a small piece of wood or thick cardboard, gently tap disc at the 9 o'clock, 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions using a hammer until the disc and bearing assembly separate:

    IMPORTANT: Do not hit the disc with the hammer using force!

Step 5: Install Replacement Bearing Assembly

  1. Place bearing assembly onto solid surface as shown below.

  2. Place the NEO disc on top of the bearing assembly carefully aligning holes.

  3. Place a bolt in every other hole. Tighten each bolt using a 4 mm Allen key in the following manner:

    • Tighten first screw until it starts to snug up. Then turn two full turns.

    • Tighten second screw until it starts to snug up. Then turn two full turns.

    • Tighten third screw until it starts to snug up. Then turn two full turns.

    Once all bolts are tight you should see the lip of the bearing block stick up just past the NEO disc as shown below.

Step 6: Reattach Extractor Tool to Disc

  1. Using a 4 mm Allen key install and tighten the bolts shown below. This will reseat the bearing assembly back onto the disc.

Step 7: Reinstall Disc onto Trainer

  1. Place the disc back onto the axle of the trainer. Holding the 24 mm bolt with your fingers, slowly spin the disc clockwise. This will guide the disc back into the axle. You will do this until the disc is nearly flush with the trainer housing.

  2. Install and tighten remaining 4 mm bolts.

  3. Insert black ring back onto axle.

  4. Install and tighten cassette body.

This completes the bearing assembly replacement process.
