What Affects the Accuracy of the Electronic Compass on my Outdoor Device

Many Garmin outdoor devices include an electronic compass. There are several factors affecting the electronic compass' accuracy, including:

  • Proper compass calibration: For assistance calibrating your compass, refer to Compass in the Table of Contents in your owner's manual. See, Finding Your Owner's Manual.
  • Surrounding environment: Metal surfaces and devices emitting an electric signal may impair the compass' accuracy.
NOTE: Some vehicles have wireless charging pads incorporated into the dashboard which will affect the accuracy of the electronic compass if the unit is placed directly on them.
  • The stillness of device: Situations causing device vibration or movement (such as the handlebars of a motorcycle) may create issues with device accuracy.

Utilizing the information above can help reduce error and improve the compass' response.
