"Prefer Mobile Data" Option in the Garmin Drive App on an Android Phone

The Garmin Drive App settings have an option to "Prefer Mobile Data" on an Android phone. This is not available on the iPhone. 

  • Checking the box will use mobile data instead of Wi-Fi when possible
    • Mobile data provides a better experience when leaving a Wi-Fi-connected area like your house
  • Unchecking the box will use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when possible
    • When leaving a Wi-Fi-connected area, it may take a few minutes for features like OK Garmin, Alexa, Traffic, and Weather to work again

The default setting has Prefer Mobile Data disabled.

The Garmin device should automatically connect to your phone when powered, but if it does not consistently do so, you can enable Prefer Mobile Data to help it make the transition from a Wi-Fi connection.


To Enable Prefer Mobile Data in the Garmin Drive app:

  1. Open Drive App 
  2. Select Settings 
  3. Scroll down and place a checkmark in Prefer Mobile Data
