Retrieving a GarminDevice.xml File for an Automotive Device

There are scenarios where the device's GarminDevice.xml file is needed by Garmin Product Support for troubleshooting. The easiest way to send this file is with the Garmin Express™ software. See Garmin Express Log Collection for instructions.

Some scenarios will require that the files be obtained manually.

To Get the Garmindevice.xml File from the Computer Manually:

Windows:

1. Connect the GPS to the Computer.

2. Press the Windows key + E.

3. Click This PC (Windows 10 & 11 only).

4. Open the Garmin drive, ex. Garmin, Drive, or zūmo listed.

  • The name of the drive will vary depending on the device.

5. Open Internal Memory or Internal Garmin Storage (MTP devices only).

6. Open the Garmin folder.

7. Right-Click on the GarminDevice.xml file.

8. Click Copy.

9. Right-Click on the Desktop.

10. Click Paste.

11. Go to https://support.garmin.com/upload.

12. Enter the email address associated with your Garmin account and accept the terms of use.

13. Drag and drop the file into the Secure File Upload and submit.

14. Reply to Garmin Product Support's email advising the file has been uploaded.

Once we have the file we can use it for testing or send it on for evaluation.

Mac:

NOTE: Devices with MTP mode are prevented from appearing as a separate drive on a Mac computer.  For these devices, a Windows computer must be used to the get the internal files manually. See the MTP device list here,
