"No Steering Controller Detected" for Yamaha Helm Master Autopilot

This error occurs when the autopilot cannot detect the boat steering system when trying to engage. If you see this message, there are a few things to consider:

  • If this is a new install, verify the placement of all components of the installation. Frequently, the Yamaha Autopilot Gateway is installed in the wrong position or not at all because the installation manual does not address it by name, and the diagram merely terminates at the Steering Controller Access portion of the cable.

For a more accurate depiction of the installation of the autopilot you must view the Autopilot Gateway Addendum included with the rest of the package's printed materials:

  • If the system installation appears according to the Addendum, or it's an established system that has worked well up until recently, then it's essential to examine the blink codes on the Yamaha Autopilot Gateway for an indication of any issues with communication. The blink codes provided below are useful in this regard:
Yamaha Gateway LED Behavior (Red)CCU LED Behavior (Red)LED Description
Repeating Single BlinkSolid OnNormal State
Repeating Double BlinkOffYamaha Connected, Gateway Data Bus not powered.
Repeating Double BlinkSolid OnYamaha Connected, Gateway Data Bus-powered, CCU Disconnected.
OffSolid OnYamaha Disconnected, Gateway powered, CCU connected.

If the blink code indicates a problem on the Autopilot side, then the cabling and network components should be carefully scrutinized. However, if the blink code indicates a problem on the steering system side, then a Yamaha dealer should be contacted for further troubleshooting.
