Best Charging and Storage Practices for Approach Models with Rechargeable Batteries

Many Garmin products use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are not replaceable which increases the importance of proper battery maintenance through proper charging and storage practices. Specific details for your Approach can be found in its owner's manual.

Best Charging Practices:

  • Charge the Approach® golf device with a wall charger or computer.

    • If charging with a computer, make sure the Garmin Express™ program is not actively updating the Approach device before safely ejecting the device.

  • Most Approach models will achieve a full charge in a 1-2 hour period or less.

  • Follow the 80/20 charging rule.

    • lithium-ion batteries prefer to live between a charge of 80 and 20% as it is less stressful on the battery.

    • They prefer not to be overcharged or depleted of charge; especially for a lengthy period of time.

Follow these steps to get the most life out of your lithium-ion battery.

Best Storage Practices:

  • Store in a dry location.

  • Ensure the Approach is powered off.

  • Ensure temperature for storage does not go outside the range of 0°C - 25° C (32° F - 77° F).

    • If temperatures exceed 55° C (131° F), some batteries will automatically discharge to prevent issues.1

  • Ensure the battery maintains a charge around 50%.

  • Check that the battery is charged to 50% periodically (1-2 months).

  • Ensure the battery does not fully discharge.

    • If your Approach does fully discharge, place it on the charger and leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before trying to turn it on.

Following these guidelines can help extend the life of rechargeable batteries when putting them into long term storage.

1 Vehicles can easily reach these temperatures and storing a device in them for any period of time is not recommended.
