Garmin Locks Up With a Long Noise, Tone or Continuous Beep When Powering Down

If a device is locking up and has a long noise, tone or continuous beep when powering down and can only be stopped by removing the batteries, hidden data has been placed from a computer on the microSD card. Mac computers add hidden files and/or folders to mounted devices.

The information and steps in this article apply to the following devices:

  • eTrex Legend® Cx and HCx
  • eTrex Venture® Cx
  • eTrex Vista® Cx and HCx
  • GPSMAP® 60Cx and 60CSx
  • GPSMAP® 76Cx and 76CSx
  • Rino® 520HCx and 530HCx

Resolution

These unused or hidden files and/or folders need to be deleted from the microSD card. As the issue is caused by a Mac computer, removing the files needs to be done on a Windows computer. Examples of these folders are: Trashes and Spotlight-V100

To delete the files and/or folders, the device needs to be in USB mass storage mode.

Placing the Device Into USB Mass Storage Mode

  1. Connect device to computer via USB cable
  2. Go to device Main Menu
  3. Select Setup
  4. Select Interface
  5. Select USB Mass Storage Mode

The device is now in USB Mass Storage Mode.

Deleting the Unused or Hidden Files and/or Folders

  1. A window should have opened on the computer desktop displaying Removable Disk at the top. Open the Garmin folder that displays
    • Note: Do NOT delete the following: Garmin (folder), gmapsupp.img (file), gmapsupp.unl (file) or gmapsupp.gma (file)
    • These files and folders contain supplemental mapping and/or track data. Deleting these in error will cause the mapping, or tracks to be erased or un-viewable
  2. Delete any other files and/or folders from the microSD card not listed in the note above
