Outdoor Maps Plus on the Alpha 200 Plus and Alpha 300 Series

With an Outdoor Maps+ subscription plan, you gain access to a wide variety of premium mapping content. This content is regularly updated and one subscription can be downloaded directly to your Alpha® 200 Plus, Alpha 300, or Alpha 300i dog tracking handheld, or any of your registered compatible Garmin devices simultaneously via Wi-Fi. The topics below explain how to activate, download, and use the different types of mapping content that are available with Outdoor Maps+.

NOTE: To use Outdoor Maps+ on the Alpha 200 Plus or Alpha 300 handhelds, the device software must be up to date. For instructions, see - Installing Software Updates to the Alpha 200 and 300 Series Handhelds.

Purchasing Outdoor Maps+

To purchase an Outdoor Maps Plus subscription, once paired in the Alpha app see, Purchasing Outdoor Maps+ in the Alpha app.
Once the subscription is purchase we need to make sure we sync the Alpha 300 or Alpha 200 Plus to unlock the subscription on the device. 

Enabling Bluetooth on the Alpha® Handheld

    1. Select Setup.
    2. Select Bluetooth.
    3. Select Continue.

Pairing to the Alpha Mobile App

  1. Open and sign in to the Alpha Mobile app on the smartphone:
    1. Select Pair Device on the first screen prompt.
      • NOTE: If you are not prompted to pair, touch Watch and Handheld Devices at the bottom of the screen, then touch Pair Device or +.
    2. Select your model of Alpha handheld
    3. The app will present a list of potential nearby Bluetooth devices that are transmitting or already in the Bluetooth list.
    4. Select your Alpha model
    5. After several moments the Alpha and the smartphone will both show a passkey number to verify the correct device being paired.
    6. A Bluetooth Pairing Request notification will pop over the app, touch Okay to confirm the pairing request.
    7. On the smartphone, touch Continue to finish the pairing process.
    8. On the Alpha handheld, touch Done.
The devices are now paired.

Activating Outdoor Maps+

After purchasing an Outdoor Maps+ subscription plan, it needs to be activated on your Alpha handheld. Make sure your Alpha handheld is paired to the Alpha® app and that you are signed into the app with the same account that was used to purchase the map subscription.


Steps for Activating Outdoor Maps+

The steps below explain how to activate an Outdoor Maps+ subscription plan on the Alpha handheld.

  1. Select Home Icon to access the main menu.

  2. Select Map Manager.

    • NOTE: This option can also be accessed from the map page by selecting 3 Lines Menu Symbol, then Map Setup.

  3. Select Outdoor Maps+.

  4. Select Check Subscription.

  5. If prompted, select Bluetooth Setup as the connection is required and follow the prompts to pair your handheld, otherwise proceed to the next step. 

  6. Wait for the activation to complete.

Once the activation completes, you can proceed with downloading Outdoor Maps+ content to the Alpha handheld.

Setting Up Wi-Fi

In order to download Outdoor Maps+ content, the Alpha handheld must be able to connect to a Wi-Fi network. The steps below are for setting up Wi-Fi directly from the handheld, but this can also be done by using the Garmin Express™ program. To set up Wi-Fi with Garmin Express, see - Adding, Removing, and Troubleshooting Wi-Fi Connections on Outdoor Handhelds.

  1. Select Home Icon to access the main menu.

  2. Select Setup.

  3. If necessary, select the toggle switch to enable Wi-Fi.

    • Toggle Up: Wi-Fi is toggled on.

    • Toggle Down: Wi-Fi is toggled off.

  4. Select Add Network.

  5. Select a wireless network from the list and enter the password, if prompted.

    NOTE: To add a non-broadcast network, select 3 Lines Menu Symbol, then Add Network and enter the network SSID and password.

The Alpha handheld will then attempt to connect to the Wi-Fi network. Once Network Added is displayed to indicate that it was successful, select OK.

Downloading Outdoor Maps+ Content

After activating an Outdoor Maps+ subscription plan, the following steps can be used to download content via Wi-Fi. These steps can be repeated to download multiple areas of the map.

  1. Select Home Icon to access the main menu.

  2. Select Map Manager.

    • NOTE: This option can also be accessed from the map page by selecting 3 Lines Menu Symbol, then Map Setup.

  3. Select Outdoor Maps+.

  4. Select +Add.

    The Alpha handheld will display Requesting Map Update Data while it connects to Wi-Fi.

  5. Select Use Map, or select a category to center the download over a specific point on the map (e.g. Cities > Olathe, Kansas > Use).

  6. Use the available actions to select an area of the map to download:

    • Drag the map to view different areas.

    • Pinch or spread two fingers on the touchscreen to zoom in and out of the map.

    • Select Zoom in Button and Zoom out Button to zoom in and out of the map. You may need to zoom in to a scale of 2 miles or less if certain layers like Satellite or USGS quadrangle map are needed.

    • Double-tap the map to quickly zoom in.

    • Select Map Layers to show or hide currently installed map layers.

    • Select Edit Pencil at the top of the screen to edit the name, storage location (internal or SD card), or which map layers to include in the download. After making changes, select Back Arrow to return to the view of the map download area.

  7. Select Download.

    NOTE: If the Download option is grayed out, you will need to adjust the area or selected layers to reduce the download size. If you receive an error that the selected maps have already been downloaded, see - Error All Selected Maps in This Area Have Already Been Downloaded to the Device.

  8. Wait for the download to complete.

While the download is in progress, make sure to keep the Alpha handheld powered on and in range of the connected Wi-Fi network. Depending on the speed of the Wi-Fi network, each download may take several minutes to complete.

Enabling or Disabling Specific Outdoor Maps+ Content

Select Map Page Icon to access the map page, then select Map Layers to choose which Outdoor Maps+ content should be displayed. The examples below show the Hydro layer being enabled and disabled.

Updating Outdoor Maps+ Content

Outdoor Maps+ content is regularly updated. The following steps can be used to to check for and download available updates.

  1. Select Home Icon to access the main menu.

  2. Select Map Manager.

    • NOTE: This option can also be accessed from the map page by selecting 3 Lines Menu Symbol, then Map Setup.

  3. Select Outdoor Maps+.

  4. Maps that can be updated will say Update Available next to them. Select the map you wish to update.

  5. Select Update.

    The Alpha handheld will display Deleting maps from [File Name] before the update begins downloading.

  6. Wait for the update to finish downloading.

While the download is in progress, make sure to keep the Alpha handheld powered on and in range of the connected Wi-Fi network. Depending on the speed of the Wi-Fi network, each download may take several minutes to complete.

Deleting Maps

If you wish to delete Outdoor Maps+ content for any reason, follow the steps below.

  1. Select Home Icon to access the main menu.

  2. Select Map Manager.

    • NOTE: This option can also be accessed from the map page by selecting 3 Lines Menu Symbol, then Map Setup.

  3. Select Outdoor Maps+.

  4. Select the file you wish to delete. The map will then be displayed.

  5. From the map view, select 3 Lines Menu Symbol.

  6. Select Delete.

  7. Select Delete when the confirmation message appears.

After completing these steps, the selected content will be removed from the handheld.
