Reinstall Maps on an Automotive Device

If your device has no maps, or the maps are missing, follow the steps below to reinstall the maps. These steps should also be used if the device lists the map in myMaps, but there is an issue, such as an incomplete install, or one of the following issues appears on the device:

  • Can't Unlock Maps
  • Can't Authenticate Maps
  • A problem or corruption with the data in the map file
  • No Detailed Maps Found that Support Routing
  • No Map Data Available

NOTE: Reinstalling the maps is not available via Wi-Fi and must be done by plugging the device into a computer and using Garmin Express™ software.  Follow the steps below.

To Reinstall the Maps: 

1. Connect your device to the computer using a USB cable

2. Open Garmin Express™ software

3. Select your device on the home page

 

4. Click Map Details

  • Skip this step if your device does not have a map update subscription.
  • Map Details is only available if the maps and the software on the device are up-to-date.
  • If there is a new map or software update available, you will instead have the option to Install or Install All (shown as a blue button on the right).

 

5. Click Map Options or Options

 

  • If Map Options is missing and you have one of the following devices, follow the steps in the articles below to reinstall the maps:

6. Click Reinstall Map

 

7. Click Continue

 

NOTES:
If the device has enough space for the update, or if a microSD / SD memory card is inserted, the full map region will be installed. If there is not enough space for the update, a microSD / SD memory card will be required to successfully update.


Not all Garmin Automotive devices support the installation of map updates directly to a memory card. See Garmin Express Prompts to "Use A Memory Card (Recommended)".

Insert a card with sufficient available space for the update into the GPS.

If a specific region was previously chosen and installed, it will have removed the original full map from the device, leaving only the smaller region.
