GND 10 Not on the NMEA 2000 Device List

GND 10 Overview

The GND 10 has three primary functions:

  • Convert the gWind transducer Nexus signal to an NMEA 2000 PGN information to be distributed on the NMEA 2000 Network
  • Provides users with a device to change Wind Angle, Speed Filters, and Wind Angle Offset
  • Provides users with the ability to interface with Personal Computer (PC) applications such as Nexus Race, Expedition, Adrena, or SeaTrack to communicate sailing specific functions between Nexus and NMEA 2000 Networks

Troubleshooting:

The first thing to consider is "Has there been ANY maintenance, changes to the vessel, water intrusion, weather events, movement or placement of "stuff" on the vessel, anyone that may have changed a device setting or looked around the vessel?"

  • If yes, look in those areas first; mainly focus on the NMEA 2000 cabling an NMEA 2000 cable or a device that was moved, re-configured, broken, or loosened.

There can be three possible things that can cause "GND 10 Not on the NMEA 2000 Device List":

  1. GND 10 has failed, the software is not current or compatible with all or other devices on NMEA 2000 Network, or the GND 10 is not communicating on the NMEA 2000 Network
  2. Chartplotter has failed, the software is not compatible with all other devices on the NMEA 2000 Network, or the chartplotter is not communicating on NMEA 2000 Network.
  3. NMEA 2000 Network has inadequate power or LEN distribution issues. Loose or broken components or not correctly constructed.

GND 10 Device

On the current GPSMAP1 series devices check the NMEA 2000 device list

From any page press, Options > Settings > Communications > NMEA 2000 Setup > Device List > Look for the GND 10 > Select GND 10 > Review

The following should appear:

  1. Manufacture: Garmin

  2. Model

  3. Software

  4. Serial #

  5. Name:

  6. A list of various options on the right hand side of the chartplotter display

NOTE:  Unless specifically directed to do so, Do not select any of the options on the right hand side of the chartplotter display while troubleshooting

  • If the GND 10 information populates in the NMEA 2000 Device List on the chartplotter, the issue has been resolved

  • If the GND 10 is not on the NMEA 2000 Device list, it is an indication the chartplotter is not communicating with the GND 10 via NMEA 2000 Network

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the problem:

Ensure the software for the GND 10 and chartplotter are current

From any page on current GPSMAP1 series devices Options > Settings > System > System Information > Garmin Devices > Record (take a picture) the software version then verify the version is the most current

If needed update software of a chartplotter or device, see Garmin Marine Device Software Updates.

  • Inspect GND 10 for damage

    • If damaged, call Garmin Product Support or a Certified Garmin Installer

  • Ensure the NMEA 2000 power is turned "On"

    • If NMEA 2000 cannot be powered on, troubleshoot the NMEA 2000 Network

  • Ensure the NMEA 2000 drop cable is fully connected to the GND 10

  • Ensure the NMEA 2000 drop cable is fully connected to the NMEA 2000 T-connector on the NMEA 2000 network

    • Remove the NMEA 2000 cable from the GND 10 and T-Connector and inspect for damage or corrosion

    • Re-connect the NMEA 2000 cable to the GND 10 and T-Connector

    • Check NMEA 2000 status light

  • NMEA 2000 Status Light is OFF

    • Temporarily install the GND 10 on another existing NMEA 2000 drop cable that is also on the NMEA 2000 network

    • Check to see if the NMEA 2000 Status light comes ON or OFF

      • If the GND 10 NMEA 2000 Status light is OFF the GND 10 has failed to power up

      • Call Garmin Product Support or a Certified Garmin Installer

  • If the NMEA 2000 Status light is ON, the original NMEA 2000 drop cable or T-connector to the GND 10 has failed

    • Replace NMEA 2000 drop cable and/or T-connector that is installed at the GND 10

  • NMEA 2000 Status Light is ON

    • What is the NMEA 2000 Status light doing/blinking?

    • See GND 10 Blink Codes to see the meaning of the status light on the GND 10 and take appropriate action per the FAQ

Chartplotter

There are some things to check on the chartplotter

  • Inspect chartplotter for damage
  • Update software on the marine system. Mismatched software causes issues.
  • Check the power switch to the NMEA 2000. Is it "on?"
  • Verify connection of the NMEA 2000 cable to the chartplotter
    • Remove and re-connect the NMEA 2000 cable and check the NMEA 2000 Device list for the GND 10
  • Are other NMEA 2000 devices missing from the NMEA 2000 Device List?
    • Inspect the NMEA 2000 backbone and cables.
    • Look for loss of power to the NMEA 2000 network, lost power, or cables disconnected.
    • Inspect the NMEA 2000 power cable's fuse and replace it if needed.
    •  LEN distribution, loose or broken cable connections, and chaffing
NMEA 2000 Network
