Garmin Express Fails to Install or Update on a Mac Computer

When installing the Garmin Express™ software to a Mac computer, there may be obstacles that can prevent the installation from completing successfully. When this occurs, an error message such as Install Failed may display or the installer may not launch.

Try the Following Solutions:

1. Use a Personal Computer

A personal computer is often required to successfully run Garmin Express. When installing Express on a business computer, the IT department responsible for the computer may need to be contacted as computers owned by businesses often have restrictions set up to prevent the installation of unauthorized programs.

2. Restart the Computer and Try Again

Note: Shutting down, pressing the power button, or closing the lid on a notebook computer may not effectively restart the computer on some operating systems. Follow the instructions below to ensure that the computer is completely restarted.

MacOS/OS X

  1. Click the Apple icon in the menu bar
  2. Click Restart...
  3. Click Restart to confirm

3. Verify the Computer Meets System Requirements for Garmin Express

Contact Apple for steps on how to check your computer's specifications

System Requirements for Mac

NOTE: With the release of Garmin Express for Mac version 7.25.0, macOS 12 and older are no longer supported. Users on macOS 11 or 12 can still install the latest Garmin Express release by downloading it at garmin.com/express, but it will not show as available within Garmin Express when checking for updates.

4. Disable Antivirus Applications

Although most security software will not interfere with Garmin Express, some more aggressive applications such as those in a business environment (on a work computer) may cause this error. If possible, try temporarily disabling the software or try a different computer if the software can't be disabled.

5. Uninstall Previously Installed Versions of Garmin Express

6. Download the Latest Version of Garmin Express

Download and reinstall the latest version of Garmin Express from the link below.  If the message "Garmin Express is already installed" is displayed, Garmin Express is already up to date.

7. Create a New Administrative User on the Mac

1. Select the  Apple icon in the upper left corner, then System Preferences or System Settings

 2. Select Users & Groups from the icons or in the list in the left column

3. If the  lock icon in the lower-left corner is closed, click on it to unlock User Preferences.

4. If prompted, enter the administrator username and password, then click Unlock. If you are not able to remember the username or password, or if your computer will not accept them, contact Apple support.

 5. Select the  add button in the lower-left corner to add a user profile.

6. Select the selection icon and select the Administrator user type.

7. Enter the new user information, then select Create User.

8. Select Allow user to administer this computer.

9. Once a new account is created on the Mac, it would be necessary to switch to that account and download Garmin Express again.

After these instructions are followed, Garmin Express should be able to install successfully. If not, the computer should be checked by an Apple-certified repair technician, or another computer should be used.
