My Fēnix 5 Plus Series Watch is Not Detected by the Computer
When a Garmin fēnix® 5 Plus series watch is plugged into a computer it, by default, will go into MTP (media transfer protocol) interface. The interaction between the watch and the computer differ based on your computer operating system.
- Windows OS: Will mount as an MTP drive, allowing Garmin applications to see the device and access to internal files through File Explorer
- Checking to see if your Garmin is mounted as a drive:
Use the key commands below to view your available computer and removable drives to see if the Garmin device is properly mounted.
- Windows 10 and Windows 8: Windows(

- Checking to see if your Garmin is mounted as a drive:
- Mac OS: Garmin applications can see and interact with MTP devices. Will not mount as a drive and you will not have access to the internal files of the watch.
If the Garmin is not recognized properly, Garmin applications will not see the device and/or an error message(s) may occur.
My Garmin Watch is not Recognized Properly:
- If your watch is set to Garmin Mode interface, select Yes when prompted to "Use MTP mode"
- Clean any build up found on the contact points of your watch
- Turn off and On the watch
- Try a different USB cable if available
- Try a different USB port
- Ensure you are plugged directly into the computer or laptop and not a USB hub
- Restart the computer
- Uninstall and reinstall the Garmin application that isn't seeing the watch
If it is still not recognized after one minute, the steps below to force the Garmin to mount should be followed.
Forcing a Garmin device to mount as a drive
Ensure the battery is charged before completing the steps below
- Disconnect the Garmin device from computer and ensure the Garmin device is powered off
- Press and hold the Start/Stop button
- Plug the watch into the computer
- Continue to hold Start/Stop for at least 30 seconds
- Release Start/Stop
The watch should now function normally.
