Garmin GPSMAP 8xxx Series Device Powering Itself Off or Not Powering On
If a GPSMAP 8000 series device is powering itself off or is not powering on, there are a few troubleshooting steps to take. The GPSMAP 8000 series has a "power ground" connection in the DVI-D cables, composite video cables, and Ethernet cables. If the "ground" wire of the device's 2-pin power cable is disconnected or faulty, the unit will shut itself off to prevent damage.
The GPSMAP 8000 series devices also have a "chassis" ground, but this is a separate ground from the power cable's ground wire.
Here are two symptoms of this issue:
- The GPSMAP 8000 series device will immediately turn off when another device on the boat is turned on/off.
- The GPSMAP 8000 series device does not turn on when connected to other devices but does turn on correctly when all cables (except the 2-pin power) are removed from the device's back.
If one of those two scenarios is happening, follow these steps:
- Ensure the negative (-) ground leads to all devices' power cables are connected to the common ground reference.
- If multiple batteries or DC power supplies exist, ensure their negative (-) ground leads to connect to the common ground reference.
- If a breaker panel is being used, ensure all devices are switched using the positive (+) power leads from the power cables. Do not switch using the negative (-) ground leads from the power cables because it introduces ground loop issues.
If the above troubleshooting steps did not resolve the issue, contact product support.
