Charging an Automotive Device
Garmin recommends that you always operate your automotive device with it connected to a power source. Full power will ensure that your device gets the best signals from GPS satellites and traffic updates.
It is advised to always use the vehicle power cable packaged with your device, or a Garmin-branded AC power charger. Third-party cables and adapters may not charge the device or put it in the proper state to receive updates. The message "Attached power cable cannot charge device. Use the cable provided with your device" may display on the device if using a third-party cable or adapter.
There are two ways to charge your automotive device's internal battery:
Note: The device will not charge when plugged into a USB cable while plugged into a USB port in the vehicle or through the computer.
Use the vehicle power cable that came with your device.

Temperature can affect the charging of a device. If the battery registers a temperature of 0°C (32°F) and below or 45°C (113°F) and above, it will not charge. For more information about the effects of temperature on your device, see Related Content.
When an automotive device is connected to external power, it will be operating from that external power. The battery will not drain.
Your device will be placed into a Standby mode when the power button is pressed and released. Before storing the device, it is recommended to fully power off the device to preserve the charge on the battery. To do this, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds, then touch Off.
If you need a Garmin-branded AC adapter, or a replacement cable, they can be purchased at Garmin’s online store.
