Questions About the Weather Widget on a Garmin Marine Device

The weather widget is found on different marine handheld and wearable products and can provide a snapshot of the current weather in the area as well as a future forecast. Below are answers to frequently asked questions about the weather widget.

Why Is the Weather Widget Not Displaying Any Weather Information?

If one of the messages or icons mentioned below is displayed, refer to the guidance listed below.

  • Weather data is not available message

  • Waiting for data message

  • Widget may display an exclamation icon

Common Troubleshooting Steps

NOTE: Being located a long distance way from the nearest weather station can result in the device's weather widget to display 'Waiting for Data'. This simply means that there is no weather information available to be displayed for the current area.

  • Power the Phone and Garmin device off and back on

  • Confirm the Garmin device is paired and connected to the phone through the Garmin Connect app

  • Confirm the Bluetooth setting on the smartphone and the Garmin device is turned on

  • For GPS capable Garmin devices, start an outdoor activity and briefly step outdoors to acquire GPS signal

  • For Apple phones, make sure the Garmin Connect app is open and/or running in the background. The app can be minimized but, it must remain open in the background to receive weather information

  • Confirm that the Location permissions for Garmin Connect are set properly

Android

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app

  2. Select Three black horizontal lines (top left)

  3. Select Settings

  4. Select Phone Permissions

  5. Select Manage Permissions

  6. Select Permissions

  7. Select Location

  8. Select Allow all the time

    • If "Allow all the time" is not an available option, toggle Location On

  9. Power the Android phone off and back on

  10. Power the Garmin device off and back on

  11. Open the Garmin Connect app

  12. Sync the device


iOS

  1. Open the Settings app on the Apple phone

  2. Select Privacy

  3. Select Location Services

  4. Toggle on if needed

  5. Select the Garmin 'Connect' app

  6. Ensure Allow Location Access is set to Always

  7. Power the Apple phone off and back on

  8. Power the Garmin device off and back on

  9. Open the Garmin Connect app

  10. Sync the device


Why is the Weather Widget Showing Incorrect Weather Data?

Garmin devices request weather data once every 20 minutes at most. Make sure to sync the device to refresh the most up to date weather data. The weather forecast on a Garmin device can appear less accurate than the current temperature if the data is stale and has not been updated recently.


Why Does the Weather Widget Information Not Match the Weather Data in a Recorded Activity?

When activities are uploaded into Garmin Connect, the weather information during the activity will appear on the activity's details page. This weather data was captured at the time when the activity started. This data may be different than the current conditions shown on the device's weather widget. Why Does the Weather Widget's Information Not Match the Weather App on the Smartphone?

The weather information displayed on the device's weather widget is collected from the closest official weather station to the starting point. For the most part, local airports will be the official weather stations. The source of the smartphone's weather app may be different from the source from where the device's weather widget data is collected.


How Does Weather Information Work With Connect IQ Apps?

Connect IQ developers create unique applications that can be loaded to your device to view various weather information. How this information is obtained and configured will vary by app and developer. Questions about data or configuration of the app would need to be directed to the developer of the app.


Can the Source of the Weather Widget Data be Changed to Display Weather From a Different Location?

The Garmin Connect app allows the user to choose between the phone's current location or from a fixed location from a map within the app.

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app

  2. Access the Menu

    • Android: Select Three black horizontal lines (upper left)

    • iOS: Select More (bottom right)

  3. Select Settings

  4. Select User Settings

  5. Select Weather Location

From here, choose from either the phone's location or a fixed location.


How Can Weather Metrics be Changed?

Some models will require the user to change temperature metrics in the Garmin Connect app only and some models will need to be updated in the app as well as on the watch. For specific details, refer to the owner's manual.

  2. Open the Menu:

    • Android: Select Three black horizontal lines(top left)

    • iOS: Select More (bottom right)

  3. Select Settings

  4. Select User Settings

  5. Select Measurement Units

  6. Set to Statute, Metric, or Statute UK
