Improving the Step Distance Accuracy of My Garmin Outdoor Watch

The Custom Stride Length feature assists with getting the most accurate step distance on a Garmin with Activity Tracking when the accelerometer is being used. A Custom Stride Length can be set by using the Garmin Connect app or website. For instructions, see Setting Custom Stride Length below. Setting the Custom Stride Length will involve walking a known distance, and counting the steps it took to complete that distance. Walking a minimum of 400 meters is needed to calibrate but walking two laps around a 400 meter track will provide the most accurate results.

Other Items to Consider

  • The GPS feature is used to calibrate the step length for running activities. If the step distance for indoor running activities is still inaccurate after having done several outdoor running activities with GPS, then the device may not be accurately counting steps.
  • Using a foot pod will NOT affect the total number of steps for the day. Using a foot pod can improve distance and pace readings, but only while recording a timed activity. Daily step totals are only recorded using the internal 3-axis accelerometer of a Garmin watch that has an activity tracking feature. For additional troubleshooting suggestions with regard to accuracy of step counting, see Related  below.
