zumo 450 or zumo 550 Device Frozen or Not Powering On

null

See below for troubleshooting steps if your automotive device won't power on. See Why is the Battery on my Brand New Automotive Device Not Charged? if you are using your device for the first time.

If the device's screen has frozen, proceed to  Reset the device  below.

Note: Temperature can affect your device's ability to power on or charge properly. See the Environment section below for more info.

Verify the device is getting power

 1. Plug your device into the vehicle with its original Garmin car charger cable or into the motorcycle with the original motorcycle power cable

    • Make sure there is nothing between your car charger cable and your vehicle's power outlet, such as a splitter or other charging accessory
    • Do not use a USB cable, pictured with a red symbol below

2. Turn the vehicle's power on
3. Check the light on the vehicle end of the power cable and make sure it is lit

    • If the cable does not light up, try a different vehicle
    • If it still does not light up, see null

4. Drive normally with the device connected to power for at least 10 minutes

The device should power on after taking these steps.

Remove any memory cards in the device

Reset the device

If the device still does not power on, or if the screen has become frozen and will not power off, a soft reset can help by forcing the device to reboot.

To perform a soft reset:

  1. Connect the device to a power source with a vehicle power cable or AC adapter
  2. Hold the power button AND the zoom (+) button down and slowly count to 20

If this is ineffective, remove and reinsert the battery using the specific steps below:

  1. Remove the battery from the zumo
  2. Plug the zumo into a computer via USB cable
  3. Place the battery back into the zumo

The device should now turn on. Leave the device connected to power to give the battery time to charge.

See Charging an Automotive Device for charging options.

Why is this happening?

An issue where your Garmin device will not turn on, is frozen, has a dead battery, or has a black screen can have several different causes:

Dead battery

  • A device will not turn on if it has an empty or "dead" battery
  • This can be resolved by charging the battery, but this is not always as simple as connecting the device to any cable or power source

Environment

  • The environment in which the device is used can affect its ability to properly receive power
    • See null for more info

Software problem

  • If the device ever "freezes" on a single screen and will not respond to your touch, the device may have run into a software "bug", "glitch", or other similar types of problem
  • Since all electronic devices do a large number of tasks and calculations every second, it is always possible for the device to get stuck at one point or another while in use
  • This chance can be minimized by making sure the device's software is up to date
