Unknown Device Error When Using inReach Sync

An 'Unknown device' error message in the inReach® Sync program is a notification that the inReach unit connected to the computer is not associated with the e-mail address used when logging into inReach Sync. This error can also occur if the inReach device has been added to an account but is not active on a subscription plan.

If you encounter this error, use the instructions below to log out of the inReach Sync program. Once done, log in again with the e-mail address associated with the inReach device to proceed with inReach Sync. If you are already logged in to the correct account, but continue to receive this error, the inReach device can be placed into Firmware Update Mode.

Click the Log Out button at the top-left of the inReach Sync program.

Click inReach Sync at the top of the screen, then click Logout.

Enabling Firmware Update Mode

  1. Disconnect the inReach from the computer and power off the inReach.
  2. Press and hold the appropriate buttons based on your model:
    • inReach Explorer® + and inReach SE® +: Press and hold XDown, and Power simultaneously.
    • inReach Explorer and inReach SE: Press and hold X, Check, and Down simultaneously.
    • inReach Mini: Press and hold Up, Back, and Power simultaneously.
  3. The device will power on into Firmware Update Mode.
  4. Connect your device to the computer.
  5. Open inReach Sync and test to confirm that the issue has been resolved.
    • NOTE: When inReach Sync recognizes your device, the app will display a message that the firmware on the device is corrupt. Click Yes to proceed with the firmware update and Sync.
