Why Can’t I Create an Account With My New inReach?

When attempting to activate an inReach® satellite communicator, one of the following error messages may appear:

  • Invalid unit number.

  • This device is already activated.

  • This device has been suspended.

  • This IMEI is locked.

One of these messages can occur with a device that was purchased directly or given as a gift. This could mean that the device is still on another user's account, or there is a billing issue from the previous user. In most situations, the user simply does not realize that their service needs to be cancelled, or that they have a billing issue. As these are potentially life-saving devices, we cannot cancel the service without speaking to the registered owner.

To resolve the issue, see below for the scenario that best applies to you.

Resolving a Locked or Suspended Device

Used or New Device Given or Purchased From a Friend or Relative.

Contact the friend or relative and let them know they need to cancel their service. See Related for information on how they can cancel the service, and how the device can be reset.

NOTE: Resetting the device does not cancel its service, it only removes previous user information and data from the device itself.

Used Device Purchased From a Private Party (such as eBay or Craigslist)

We highly recommend returning the device to the seller to obtain a refund.

If this is not possible, ask the seller if they are willing to cancel the service. See Related for information on how they can cancel the service, and how you can reset the device.

Some resale platforms offer buyer protection. Contact the platform directly for information or assistance if needed.

New Device Purchased From an Authorized Retailer (such as Cabela's, REI, Gander Outdoors, etc.)

We highly suggest trying to return or exchange the device directly through the retailer as this may be easier and/or faster, and in some cases may be the only solution.

If this is not possible, reach out to our Billing Team with a copy of the proof of purchase, device's IMEI number, and description of the situation to determine if anything else can be done: Contact Garmin Services Billing.
