Messaging, Locating, and Starting Tracking for inReach Account Owners

With an active subscription, the inReach® account owner can send a message to, start tracking, locate, or send a location to the inReach device all from the Garmin Explore™ website. 

If you are not the account owner, similar controls can be found on the user's MapShare™ page. For more information, see - null.

When the following controls are used, the inReach device needs to be powered on with a clear view of the sky to start tracking, return location requests, or receive locations and messages.


Sending a Message to the inReach Device

  1. Sign in at explore.garmin.com.

  2. Go to Map.

  3. Select User Message Icon to the right of the account name in the left panel.

  4. Select Message. A "Send Message" box will appear.

  5. Compose a message.

  6. Select Send.


Starting Tracking on the inReach Device

IMPORTANT: To use the remote Tracking feature, MapShare needs to be enabled. For how to enable MapShare page, refer to the appropriate Setting Up MapShare article for your device under Related .

  1. Sign in at explore.garmin.com.

  2. Go to Map.

  3. Select User Message Icon to the right of the account name in the left panel.

  4. Select Track. A "User Tracking" box will appear.

  5. Click the dropdown and choose a tracking interval.

  6. Select OK.

Locating the inReach Device

IMPORTANT: To use the Location feature, you must first consent to the use of MapShare page. This can be done from explore.garmin.com under the Social page by clicking the 'I consent to the use of MapShare' box. A Location Request does count as one message.

  1. Sign in at explore.garmin.com.

  2. Go to Map.

  3. Select User Message Icon to the right of the account name in the left panel.

  4. Select Locate. A "Request Location" box will appear.

  5. Select Request.

Making multiple location requests will not speed up the process and may cause further requests to be unsuccessful. Before the inReach device will respond to the location request with its current location, the inReach device needs to perform a mail check. See Related for more information.

Sending a Location/Waypoint to the inReach Device

  1. Sign in at explore.garmin.com.

  2. Go to Map.

  3. Select User Message Icon to the right of the account name in the left panel.

  4. Select Send.

  5. Enter coordinates.

    • Optional: You can also compose a message.

  6. Select Send.
