Pairing and Activation Instructions for Garmin Messenger App Compatible inReach Devices

The Garmin Messenger™ app is an Android and iOS mobile application that optimizes inReach® messaging to use the cellular connection of your compatible smartphone when it is available, then switches to 100% global Iridium® satellite connection with a compatible inReach device when you go beyond available cellular coverage range. It also allows you to control and customize certain functions and settings for the connected inReach device.

When you first set up the Garmin Messenger app, you are prompted to verify your mobile phone number on the mobile phone that will be used. From that point on, any inReach messages sent to your phone number will be routed to the Garmin Messenger app instead of your phone's default text messaging app.

This article contains pairing instructions for each inReach device that is compatible with the Garmin Messenger app. Choose your device below for detailed instructions.

NOTE: In order to pair your inReach device, a data connection is required on the phone and the software on the inReach device may need to be updated. For instructions on updating the inReach device with a computer before pairing it in the Garmin Messenger app, see - Updating the Software on Your Outdoor Handheld With Garmin Express.  

IMPORTANT:  If you pair your Garmin device through your phone's native Bluetooth® settings first, it will not successfully pair to the Garmin Messenger app. Pairing must occur from within the Garmin Messenger app for Garmin devices. If you are having trouble pairing, try starting over by first removing the device from your Garmin Messenger app and then forgetting the Garmin device from your phone's Bluetooth settings. Go through the pairing process starting from the Garmin Messenger app using the instructions below.


Alpha® 200i Handheld

If you are pairing a new device, proceed with the steps below. If you have an inReach device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, see - Master Reset for Alpha 200 or Alpha 200i Handheld.

1. Setting up the Garmin Messenger App

  1. Install and open the Garmin Messenger™ app.

  2. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  3. Tap Get Started.

  4. Select Create Account, then enter your name, email, and a password and select Next.

    • NOTE: If you already have a Garmin account or have previously used other Garmin apps such as Garmin Connect™ or Garmin Explore™ you can select Sign In (or Continue as ['username'], if prompted).

  5. Follow the prompts to verify your mobile phone number, confirm you have read the End User License Agreement, then select Next.

    • NOTE: If you use a VPN on your phone, it may need to be temporarily disabled during this step as it may prevent the app from being able to send the verification code to your mobile phone number. VPN can be reenabled after you have finished setting up the app.

  6. Enter the verification code sent to your mobile phone number.

  7. Select Next and follow the prompts to enable permissions.

2. Pairing the Alpha 200i

  1. In the Garmin Messenger app, select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  2. Select Add Device (or Devices > Add Device).

  3. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  4. When powering on the Alpha for the first time, you will be prompted to select a language, then activate, and it will automatically start looking for the Garmin Messenger app.

    • If you are not prompted to pair with Garmin Messenger during the initial setup, update your software.

    • If you had skipped this previously, you can enable pairing mode on the Alpha by selecting Home> Setup > Bluetooth > Continue.

    • If your Alpha is currently connected with the Garmin Explore™ or Alpha app on your phone, skip to step 5.

  5. In the Garmin Messenger app, select Connect It and enter the 6 digit code from the Alpha when prompted.

If an inReach plan has not yet been activated, continue with the steps below to activate. If an inReach plan was already activated previously, you will not be prompted to activate and the Alpha will be ready to use with the app.

3. Activating an inReach Plan

NOTE: Credit or debit card information needs to be provided in order to complete the activation steps below.

  1. After completing the steps above for pairing, select Activate when prompted.

  2. Choose between inReach Essential, inReach Standard, and inReach Premium plans.

    Tap Select This Plan for the chosen plan.

  3. SOS step:

    • Read through the included SOS benefits, then click Next.

    • If desired, choose Add for one of the Search and Rescue (SAR) insurance plans. This is not required. SAR insurance plans are available for purchase in the US, Canada. and US Territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands). Once finished, select Next or Skip.

  4. Select the box to agree to automatic renewal, enter the names of the insured individual and beneficiary if SAR was added, then select Next.

  5. Review the terms and conditions, then select Accept & Continue.

  6. Enter your billing information, then select Next.

  7. Enter your emergency information (or select the box for Same as Billing Info), then select Next.

    • Emergency Notes is a good place to add information of any known medical concerns. If you have additional coverage for medical evacuation or search and rescue, you can include that and how to get in contact with the company providing that service. Example:

  8. Add Emergency contacts information, then select Next.

  9. Review all entered information to confirm it is correct, then enter your credit card information.

  10. Check the box to authorize use of this payment method for future account charges, then select Complete Activation.

  11. Once the activation is processing you can select Close.

    Processing Purchase

After completing the steps in the app, follow the prompts on the Alpha to complete the activation. If this was skipped on the handheld previously, touch Home to reach the main menu, then select inReach > Activate.

Next, ensure that the Alpha has a clear view of the sky or a connection to the Garmin Messenger app and wait for the activation to complete on the device.


Alpha® 300i Handheld

If you are pairing a new device, proceed with the steps below. If you have an inReach device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, see - Master Reset for the Alpha 300 or Alpha 300i.

1. Setting up the Garmin Messenger App

  1. Install and open the Garmin Messenger™ app.

  2. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  3. Tap Get Started.

  4. Select Create Account, then enter your name, email, and a password and select Next.

    • NOTE: If you already have a Garmin account or have previously used other Garmin apps such as Garmin Connect™ or Garmin Explore™ you can select Sign In (or Continue as ['username'], if prompted).

  5. Follow the prompts to verify your mobile phone number, confirm you have read the End User License Agreement, then select Next.

    • NOTE: If you use a VPN on your phone, it may need to be temporarily disabled during this step as it may prevent the app from being able to send the verification code to your mobile phone number. VPN can be reenabled after you have finished setting up the app.

  6. Enter the verification code sent to your mobile phone number.

  7. Select Next and follow the prompts to enable permissions.

2. Pairing the Alpha 300i

  1. In the Garmin Messenger app, select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  2. Select Add Device (or Devices > Add Device).

  3. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  4. When powering on the Alpha for the first time, you will be prompted to select a language, then activate, and it will automatically start looking for the Garmin Messenger app.

    • If you are not prompted to pair with Garmin Messenger during the initial setup, update your software.

    • If you had skipped this previously, you can enable pairing mode on the Alpha by selecting Home > Setup > Bluetooth > Continue.

    • If your Alpha is currently connected with the Garmin Explore™ or Alpha app on your phone, skip to step 5.

  5. In the Garmin Messenger app, select Connect It and enter the 6 digit code from the Alpha  when prompted.

If an inReach plan has not yet been activated, continue with the steps below to activate. If an inReach plan was already activated previously, you will not be prompted to activate and the Alpha will be ready to use with the app.

3. Activating an inReach Plan

NOTE: Credit or debit card information needs to be provided in order to complete the activation steps below.

  1. After completing the steps above for pairing, select Activate when prompted.

  2. Choose between inReach Essential, inReach Standard, and inReach Premium plans.

    Tap Select This Plan for the chosen plan.

  3. SOS step:

    • Read through the included SOS benefits, then click Next.

    • If desired, choose Add for one of the Search and Rescue (SAR) insurance plans. This is not required. SAR insurance plans are available for purchase in the US, Canada. and US Territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands). Once finished, select Next or Skip.

  4. Select the box to agree to automatic renewal, enter the names of the insured individual and beneficiary if SAR was added, then select Next.

  5. Review the terms and conditions, then select Accept & Continue.

  6. Enter your billing information, then select Next.

  7. Enter your emergency information (or select the box for Same as Billing Info), then select Next.

    • Emergency Notes is a good place to add information of any known medical concerns. If you have additional coverage for medical evacuation or search and rescue, you can include that and how to get in contact with the company providing that service. Example:

  8. Add Emergency contacts information, then select Next.

  9. Review all entered information to confirm it is correct, then enter your credit card information.

  10. Check the box to authorize use of this payment method for future account charges, then select Complete Activation.

  11. Once the activation is processing you can select Close.

    Processing Purchase

After completing the steps in the app, follow the prompts on the Alpha to complete the activation. If this was skipped on the handheld previously, touch Home to reach the main menu, then select inReach > Activate.

Next, ensure that the Alpha has a clear view of the sky or a connection to the Garmin Messenger app and wait for the activation to complete on the device.


GPSMAP® 66i, 67i, 86i, and 86sci Handhelds

If you are pairing a new device, proceed with the steps below. If you have an inReach device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, see - How to Reset the GPSMAP Handheld Devices.

1. Setting up the Garmin Messenger App

  1. Install and open the Garmin Messenger™ app.

  2. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  3. Tap Get Started.

  4. Select Create Account, then enter your name, email, and a password and select Next.

    • NOTE: If you already have a Garmin account or have previously used other Garmin apps such as Garmin Connect™ or Garmin Explore™ you can select Sign In (or Continue as ['username'], if prompted).

  5. Follow the prompts to verify your mobile phone number, confirm you have read the End User License Agreement, then select Next.

    • NOTE: If you use a VPN on your phone, it may need to be temporarily disabled during this step as it may prevent the app from being able to send the verification code to your mobile phone number. VPN can be reenabled after you have finished setting up the app.

2. Pairing the GPSMAP Handheld

  1. In the Garmin Messenger app, select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  2. Select Add Device (or Devices > Add Device).

  3. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  4. When powering on the GPSMAP for the first time, you will be prompted to select a language, then activate, and it will automatically start looking for the Garmin Messenger app.

    • If you are not prompted to pair with Garmin Messenger during the initial setup, update your software.

    • If you had skipped this previously, you can enable pairing mode from the main menu on the GPSMAP by selecting Setup > Bluetooth > Continue.

    • If your GPSMAP is currently connected with another Garmin app on your phone, skip to step 5.

  5. In the Garmin Messenger app, select Connect It and enter the 6 digit code from the GPSMAP when prompted.

If an inReach plan has not yet been activated, continue with the steps below to activate. If an inReach plan was already activated previously, you will not be prompted to activate and the GPSMAP will be ready to use with the app.

3. Activating an inReach Plan

NOTE: Credit or debit card information needs to be provided in order to complete the activation steps below.

  1. After completing the steps above for pairing, select Activate when prompted.

  2. Choose between inReach Essential, inReach Standard, and inReach Premium plans.

    Tap Select This Plan for the chosen plan.

inReach® Messenger Satellite Communicator

If you are pairing a new device, proceed with the steps below. If you have an inReach device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, see - Full Reset of the inReach Messenger.

1. Setting up the Garmin Messenger App

When powering on the inReach Messenger for the first time, you will be prompted to select a language and then it will automatically start looking for the Garmin Messenger app. If you had skipped this on the device previously, you can enable pairing mode on the inReach Messenger by following these steps:

    1. If necessary, press and hold Left Arrow Button to reach the home page.

    2. Press Left Arrow Button or Right Arrow Button to scroll through the main menu and select SETTINGS Wrench.

    3. Select Phone Bluetooth Symbol.

    4. The inReach Messenger may automatically start searching for the Garmin Messenger app, or you may need to select Pair Device if prompted.

  5. In the Garmin Messenger app, select Connect It and enter the 6 digit code from the inReach Messenger when prompted.

If an inReach plan has not yet been activated, continue with the steps below to activate. If an inReach plan was already activated previously, you will not be prompted to activate and the inReach Messenger will be ready to use with the app.

3. Activating an inReach Plan

inReach® Messenger Plus Satellite Communicator

If you are pairing a new device, proceed with the steps below. If you have an inReach device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, see - Full Reset of the inReach Messenger Plus.

1. Setting up the Garmin Messenger App

  1. Install and open the Garmin Messenger™ app.

  2. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  3. Tap Get Started.

  4. Select Create Account, then enter your name, email, and a password and select Next.

    1. If necessary, press and hold Left Arrow Button to reach the home page.

    2. Press Left Arrow Button or Right Arrow Button to scroll through the main menu and select SETTINGS Gear Wheel.

    3. Select Phone Bluetooth Symbol.

    4. The inReach Messenger Plus may automatically start searching for the Garmin Messenger app, or you may need to select Pair Phone if prompted.

  5. In the Garmin Messenger app, select Connect It and enter the 6 digit code from the inReach Messenger Plus when prompted.

inReach® Mini 2 Satellite Communicator

If you are pairing new device, proceed with the steps below. If you have an inReach device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, see - Full Reset of the inReach Mini 2.

1. Setting up the Garmin Messenger App

  1. Install and open the Garmin Messenger™ app.

  2. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  3. Tap Get Started.

  4. Select Create Account, then enter your name, email, and a password and select Next.

    • NOTE: If you already have a Garmin account or have previously used other Garmin apps such as Garmin Connect™ or Garmin Explore™ you can select Sign In (or Continue as ['username'], if prompted).

When powering on the inReach Mini 2 for the first time, you will be prompted to select a language and then it will automatically start looking for the Garmin Messenger app. If you had skipped this on the device previously, you can enable pairing mode on the inReach Mini 2 by following these steps:

    1. From the home page, press OK.

    2. Select Wrench Settings.

    3. Select Bluetooth Symbol Phone.

    4. Select Pair Phone.

  5. In the Garmin Messenger app, select Connect It and enter the 6 digit code from the inReach Mini 2 when prompted.

If an inReach plan has not yet been activated, continue with the steps below to activate. If an inReach plan was already activated previously, you will not be prompted to activate and the inReach Mini 2 will be ready to use with the app.

Montana® 700i, 710i, 750i, and 760i Handhelds

If you are pairing a new device, proceed with the steps below. If you have an inReach device that was acquired second-hand, it may need to be reset before proceeding with these steps. To reset the device, see - How to Reset Montana 700 Series Device.

1. Setting up the Garmin Messenger App

  1. Install and open the Garmin Messenger™ app.

  2. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  3. Tap Get Started.

  4. Select Create Account, then enter your name, email, and a password and select Next.

    • NOTE: If you already have a Garmin account or have previously used other Garmin apps such as Garmin Connect™ or Garmin Explore™ you can select Sign In (or Continue as ['username'], if prompted).

  5. Follow the prompts to verify your mobile phone number, confirm you have read the End User License Agreement, then select Next.

    • NOTE: If you use a VPN on your phone, it may need to be temporarily disabled during this step as it may prevent the app from being able to send the verification code to your mobile phone number. VPN can be reenabled after you have finished setting up the app.

  6. Enter the verification code sent to your mobile phone number.

  7. Select Next and follow the prompts to enable permissions.

2. Pairing the Montana 700i/710i/750i/760i

  1. In the Garmin Messenger app, select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  2. Select Add Device (or Devices > Add Device).

  3. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  4. When powering on the Montana for the first time, you will be prompted to select a language, then activate, and it will automatically start looking for the Garmin Messenger app.

    • If you are not prompted to pair with Garmin Messenger during the initial setup, update your software.

    • If you had skipped this previously, you can enable pairing mode on the Montana by selecting Home > Setup > Pair Phone.

    • If your Montana is currently connected with another Garmin app on your phone, skip to step 5.

  5. In the Garmin Messenger app, select Connect It and enter the 6 digit code from the Montana when prompted.

If an inReach plan has not yet been activated, continue with the steps below to activate. If an inReach plan was already activated previously, you will not be prompted to activate and the Montana will be ready to use with the app.

3. Activating an inReach Plan

NOTE: Credit or debit card information needs to be provided in order to complete the activation steps below.

  1. After completing the steps above for pairing, select Activate when prompted.

  2. Choose between inReach Essential, inReach Standard, and inReach Premium plans.

    Tap Select This Plan for the chosen plan.

  3. SOS step:

    • Read through the included SOS benefits, then click Next.

    • If desired, choose Add for one of the Search and Rescue (SAR) insurance plans. This is not required. SAR insurance plans are available for purchase in the US, Canada. and US Territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands). Once finished, select Next or Skip.

  4. Select the box to agree to automatic renewal, enter the names of the insured individual and beneficiary if SAR was added, then select Next.

  5. Review the terms and conditions, then select Accept & Continue.

  6. Enter your billing information, then select Next.

  7. Enter your emergency information (or select the box for Same as Billing Info), then select Next.

    • Emergency Notes is a good place to add information of any known medical concerns. If you have additional coverage for medical evacuation or search and rescue, you can include that and how to get in contact with the company providing that service. Example:

  8. Add Emergency contacts information, then select Next.

  9. Review all entered information to confirm it is correct, then enter your credit card information.

  10. Check the box to authorize use of this payment method for future account charges, then select Complete Activation.

  11. Once the activation is processing you can select Close.

    Processing Purchase

After completing the steps in the app, follow the prompts on the Montana to complete the activation. If this was skipped on the handheld previously, touch Home to reach the main menu, then select inReach > inReach Activation.

Next, ensure that the Montana has a clear view of the sky or a connection to the Garmin Messenger app and wait for the activation to complete on the device.
