The difference between using Expedition Mode and not using Expedition Mode is shown by the blue track below. The track recorded with Expedition Mode enabled has less defined corners than the track recorded when not in Expedition Mode.

Track Settings Explained on the Montana 700i/750i
Montana 700i and 750i handhelds have the ability to perform tracking to keep a log of where you have been or to share track points to MapShare so others can follow along with your progress. This article helps with understanding and using the tracking features of the handheld.
Tracking Settings
These settings control how the handheld sends track points to MapShare using the Iridium satellite network.
NOTE: With the Safety plan, there is an additional cost per send/track point (varies by currency). For example, if your moving interval is set to 30 minutes and you have tracking on for 1 hour, you will be charged for 3 send/track points. For more details, see - inReach Subscription Plan Options and Feature Information.
Auto Track
When enabled, tracking will start automatically when the handheld is turned on.
Link With Recording
When enabled, tracking will start and stop with the Recording Controls. For more details on Recording Controls, see - null
Moving Interval
This setting determines how often the handheld will send track points with the current GPS position, elevation, speed and heading of the handheld to MapShare. Friends and family members with your MapShare link will be able to see each track point that is sent to the account and follow along with your progress.
Moving interval is used to allow people to see track progress through the MapShare page. The default moving interval is once every 10 minutes.
When viewing tracks on MapShare, clicking on a point will give information regarding that exact point's time and date.
Recording Settings
These settings control how the handheld records and stores more detailed points of the track to internal memory. These stored track points will only appear on MapShare after syncing with the Garmin Explore app. For more details on how to sync, see - Syncing a Montana 700i/750i With the Garmin Explore Website and App.
Record Method
The default option, Auto, records points at a variable rate to create an optimum representation of your path. You can also record points at specific time or distance intervals.
Interval
Determines how often the handheld records your GPS position. Each point recorded is saved to the handheld. The recorded points are connected by lines to create an activity. The recorded data remains stored on the handheld until it has been synced with the Garmin Explore app. Once synced, the log information will be available in the Garmin Explore app, and the map tab of your Garmin Explore account.
Recording interval is used for recording detailed tracks in the field. The default recording interval is Normal, with the Record Method set to Auto.
Auto Pause
When enabled, the handheld will pause recording of your path when you are not moving and will resume recording when you start moving again.
Auto Start
When enabled, the handheld will start a new recording automatically when the previous recording ends.
Activity Type
This sets the default activity type (hiking, hunting, etc.) for the handheld. This also affects how synced activities are labeled in Garmin Explore.
Advanced Setup
Provides additional recording settings:
- Output Format: Saves the recording as a FIT file (default) or a GPX and FIT file. The FIT option records your activity with fitness information that is tailored for the Garmin Connect app and can be used for navigation. The FIT and GPX option records your activity as both a traditional track that can be viewed on the map and used for navigation, and as an activity with fitness information.
- Auto Save: Sets an automated schedule to save your recordings. Choose between Auto (default), When Full, Daily, Weekly, or Never. This helps organize your trips and save memory space.
- Trip Recording: Sets a trip recording option to control the totals displayed in the trip computer. Choose between During Activity (default) or Always.
- Recorded Data Reset: Sets a reset option. The Activity and Trip option resets the recording and trip data when you finish the active recording. The Prompted option prompts you to select the data to reset.
Expedition Mode
This setting will disable or limit several features (listed below) to conserve the battery life of the device for tracking. While in Expedition Mode, the device will go into a "sleep" mode and the screen will appear to be turned off. Tapping the power button will "wake" the handheld up to be used as normal.
- Track points are dropped via a smart recording mode that determines the best interval to log based off movement and device activity.
- Less movement will result in fewer tracks points and longer battery life.
- More movement will result in more track points and shorter battery life.
- Track log detail will be reduced when the setting is enabled.
- Bluetooth connections are disabled.
- ANT + connections to Heart Rate monitors or other sensors are disabled.
- Using the Expedition Mode (with a clear view to the sky) can increase battery life by days or even weeks.
- When enabled the screen will turn off and a green Status LED will occasionally flash to let you know the unit is still powered on and recording data.
- inReach tracking will still send track points at the user specified moving interval when in Expedition Mode.
- If messages are sent to the handheld while in Expedition mode, the messages will be received at the same time the handheld sends a track point (moving interval).
NOTE: There will be no notification that a message was received while in Expedition Mode. The messages can be viewed after tapping the power button to "wake" up the handheld.
- If messages are sent to the handheld while in Expedition mode, the messages will be received at the same time the handheld sends a track point (moving interval).
