Improved Functional Threshold Power Feature

Garmin has improved the functional threshold power feature by being able to detect an FTP reading with the optical heart rate sensor on your watch when it is paired with a power meter. This enhancement replaces the requirement to use a Garmin heart rate monitor strap and will lead to the watch being able to auto detect your FTP easier. You must still obtain a VO2 Max Estimate reading first to obtain an FTP reading.

NOTICE: This feature enhancement requires your device software to be updated. If you need help updating the software, see Updating Garmin Device Software.

Where Did My FTP Guided Test Go?

With this improved feature, the need for a guided test is no longer required. By completing a cycling activity that includes power data, if your FTP is detected you will be notified when saving the activity.

Can I Input My Own FTP Reading?

You can add a manual reading on your watch within your user profile under Power Zones. Entering a manual reading will turn off the auto-detect feature on the device. You can turn auto detection back on at any point and your device will continue providing estimates again.

Why Am I Not Getting an Updated FTP Reading?

We continuously analyze your qualifying activities to estimate your Functional Threshold Power. If you haven't seen an update, it simply means your FTP has remained consistent.
