dezl LGV/OTR800 or dezl LGV/OTR1000 Device Routing Inaccurately or Giving Wrong Directions

If a trucking device is routing out of the way or the wrong way, there are a few things that could cause this.

Examples of truck routing issues include:

  • The device is recommending a route that is far slower/longer than the optimal route
  • The device is offering out of the way routes to a destination
  • The device is making illogical routing choices (e.g. routing off of a highway, and then recommending to re-enter the highway)
  • The device is ignoring avoidances during a route (e.g. recommending an unpaved road, when unpaved roads are set to be avoided)
  • The device refuses to route through an area where trucks are allowed
  • The device is avoiding routes that the truck Profile (weight, height, etc.) should allow
  • Incorrect Hazardous Material routing

If driving with an active route (you have entered a destination and touched Go) and a shortcut is taken, the device will recognize the new path and recalculate the route using that change. It may try to go back to the original path at first but typically will adjust to the new route as progress is made.

Note: Out of date maps or software can cause the device to route inappropriately. For instructions on updating the device's software and maps, view the appropriate video tutorial below.

Navigation Settings

There are navigation settings on the device that can affect the way it calculates routes.

  • Calculation Mode – Options here are Faster Time and Off-Road. Garmin recommends keeping this set to Faster Time to take advantage of the most efficient and direct roads.
  • Avoidances – This setting gives the ability to tell the device what roadways are unwanted. By placing a checkmark in the option boxes, it is telling the device to not use these items when calculating routes. If a selection is unavoidable on a route it could force the device to navigate well out of the way. Garmin recommends reviewing these items when going on long trips or driving in a new area to prevent using unnecessary avoidances.

Usage Mode and Vehicle Profile

The Usage Mode refers to different ways the device can navigate, (eg. Car, Truck). Car mode will give turn-by-turn directions based on mapping and road information. Truck mode will provide turn-by-turn directions using major roads and is designed for commercial trucks. This setting will also attempt to route away from parkways or small streets where it would be hard to turn around with a larger vehicle.

Vehicle Profile

An improperly entered vehicle profile can cause significant routing issues. Be sure to check the vehicle profile and ensure that all of the information entered is accurate for the vehicle.

See the owner's manual for instructions to edit the vehicle profile.

    Gross and Axle Weight

Ensure the actual weight of the vehicle has been set for the gross and axle weight on the profile, and not the maximum possible weight of the vehicle. Setting the profile for the maximum possible weight may result in unneeded restrictions.

For example, on many interstate highways, the maximum gross weight allowed is 80,000 lbs/40 tons. If the profile is set to this weight, it may avoid roads with this restriction. If the profile is set for the actual weight carried below this limit, restrictions should not be encountered.

Also, ensure that the rest of the trucking profile information is accurate to avoid incorrect routes. Information on properly configuring the axle weight on the vehicle profile can be found in null.
