Garmin Dash Cam 45, Garmin Dash Cam 54, Garmin Dash Cam 55, or Garmin Dash Cam 65W Not Recording or Missing Video

Follow the steps below if saved or unsaved footage cannot be found on your Garmin Dash Cam device, the VIRB Mobile App, or the device's SD card:

  1. Ensure the device is recording video
  2. Check Event Detection settings
  3. Check SD card compatibility
  4. Ensure the device and VIRB Mobile app are up to date
  5. Format or replace the SD card

Ensure the device is recording video

Make sure that the SD card is inserted all the way into the Garmin Dash Cam device. If it is not, the device will display an error message. It is easiest to use a fingernail to press the SD card into the slot at the bottom of the device until a click is heard.

The Dash Cam device cannot record video if connected to a computer, the Gallery app is open on the device, and/or the device has been placed into sharing mode with the Garmin VIRB Mobile app.

Closing the app will not be sufficient to end sharing mode if the device is connected to the Garmin VIRB Mobile app on your phone to share footage. It will be necessary to exit the sharing mode on the device itself.

The Dash Cam is recording if the LED in the lower-left corner is solid red.

See Indication that a Garmin Dash Cam is Recording Video for more information.

Check Event Detection settings

Event Detection may be disabled if the Dash Cam device is not saving video of events (e.g. collisions or sudden stops).

To check Event Detection settings:

    1. Ensure the device is turned on
    2. Press the DC 45 up transparent up button (second from top) on the right edge of the device
    3. Press the DC 45 save go transparent select button (first from bottom) to open the Settings page
    4. Select Camera
    5. Press the DC 45 down transparent down button. Event Detection will be highlighted
    6. Press the DC 45 save go transparent select button if there is no checkmark next to Event Detection
    7. Press the DC 45 power back transparent  back button (first from top) to save changes

The Dash Cam device will now automatically save video when it detects an event.

Check SD card compatibility

The Garmin Dash Cam device may not be able to record footage onto incompatible SD cards. Click the link below applying to your device for more info:

Ensure the device and VIRB Mobile app are up to date

The software of your Garmin Dash Cam device can be updated using either the VIRB Mobile app on a smartphone or Garmin Express on a computer. See below for instructions.

Search for the VIRB Mobile app in the App Store or Google Play Store to see if updates are available for the app.

Format or replace the SD card

The SD card may need to be formatted to record more footage if it contains corrupted data. See null.

You may need to replace the card if the Dash Cam still shows no videos recorded after formatting the card or if the card cannot be formatted. See SD Memory Card Sizes for Automotive Devices for information about recommended card sizes.

Contact Product Support if the Dash Cam continues to fail to record any video.
