Device Files Backed Up to the Computer by Garmin Express

Garmin Express can save up to 3 individual backup files per device. When a device is deleted from the Tools menu, a dialog box provides the option to delete the backup files. If this is unchecked, the files will remain on the computer.

  • Custom Avoidances are not backed up. If they are removed, they will need to be created again. For instructions on creating, editing, or deleting custom avoidances on an automotive device, see Creating, Editing, or Deleting Custom Avoidances on an Automotive Device.
  • On dēzl™ devices, the .csv files are not backed up. This means that IFTA and Hours of Service (HOS) data will not back up with Garmin Express.

If needed, the backup files can be found manually in these locations:

  • Windows:
    • C:\Users\%username%\Documents*\Garmin\Backups
  • Mac OS X:
    • ~\Library**\Application Support\Garmin\Express\RegisteredDevices\%UnitID%\Backups

On Windows 7, the Documents folder contains both the My Documents and Public Documents folder. Backups are located in the My Documents\Garmin folder.

On Mac OS X Lion (10.7) and higher, the Library folder is hidden. To open Library:

  1. Open Finder
  2. Click Go (at the top of the menu bar)
  3. Click Home
  4. Click Go (at the top of the menu bar)
  5. Click Go to Folder...
  6. Type Library
  7. Click Go
