Outdoor Handheld - Error "This route does not match the available maps" When Selecting a Route

When attempting to navigate a route on a Garmin Outdoor handheld, you may encounter the error, This route does not match the available maps.

There are a few reasons for this to occur. Those are listed below, along with how to resolve them.

Map On Handheld is Different Than Map Used to Create Route

The route created in BaseCamp™ software was made with a different version of mapping than what is loaded in the device.

For example, if City Navigator® road map version 2021 is loaded on the device, but City Navigator map version 2020 was selected in the BaseCamp program when the route was created.

To fix this, you would need to recreate the route using the map that is on the device so they match. For more information on selecting the correct map during route creation, see - Route Creation - BaseCamp for Windows or Route Creation - BaseCamp for Mac

Route Travels Through Area That Map on Device Does Not Cover

The route travels through an area that the map loaded on the device does not have coverage for. For example, your route travels from Texas to Iowa, but your map does not include Iowa.

The same is true for maps on a preprogrammed microSD card, downloaded maps, or maps loaded to a device or card via MapInstall™ software.

For maps loaded via MapInstall software, you may not have installed enough map segments of the area needed to cover the full length of the route. Zooming out1 to 200 miles on the Map page of the device allows you to see the grey outlines of the map segments. This should help in determining which areas of mapping are missing based on the route path. You can then use MapInstall software to load the additional segments needed. For more information, see - null and Install DVD Maps to a Device with MapInstall

Map Used to Create Route Was Updated

At some point, you may update or purchase the newer version of a map that a route was created with.

When a route is created in BaseCamp software, the data from the map that was selected is embedded into the route itself.

So when that same map is updated, the route created with the previous map version is no longer valid.

To allow the route to work with the newer version of the map, you can recalculate it in the BaseCamp program using the new map and then transfer it back to the device. Steps for this are below.

Recalculating a Route With the New Map Version in BaseCamp for Windows

  1. Plug your device in to the computer
  2. Open the BaseCamp program
  3. Select your device's Internal Storage folder under Devices
    • If the route is on a microSD/SD card inserted in the device, select that instead. It should be under the device name, and may be labeled as the card manufacturer or simply microSD card
  4. Locate and delete the route that needs to be recalculated
  5. Select Maps from the top toolbar
  6. Select the newer map version
  7. Locate the created route that you want to recalculate from your Library
  8. Double-click the route name
  9. Select Recalculate
  10. When the recalculation is done, transfer the route back to the device.

If you find that the route is no longer in BaseCamp, but it is still on the device, you can pull it back into BaseCamp with the following steps:

  1. Plug your device in to the computer
  2. Open the BaseCamp program
  3. Select Device from the top toolbar
  4. Select Receive from Device
  5. Select the device
  6. Select OK
  7. Use steps 3-8 above to recalculate and transfer it back to the device

Recalculating a Route With the New Map Version in BaseCamp for Mac

  1. Plug your device in to the computer
  2. Open the BaseCamp program
  3. Select your device under My Garmin Devices
    • If the route is on a microSD/SD card inserted in the device, select that instead. It should be under the device name, and may be labeled as the card manufacturer or No Name
  4. Locate and delete the route that needs to be recalculated
  5. Select Maps from the top toolbar
  6. Select the newer map version
  7. Locate the created route that you want to recalculate from My Collection
  8. Double-click the route
  9. Select the circular recalculate arrow
  10. When the recalculation is done, transfer the route back to the device.

If you find that the route is no longer in BaseCamp software, but it is still on the device, you can pull it back into the BaseCamp program with the following steps:

  1. Plug your device in to the computer
  2. Open the BaseCamp program
  3. Select Transfer from the top toolbar
  4. Select Receive from Device
  5. Select the device and check the boxes for the data you want to receive
  6. Select Receive
  7. Use steps 3-8 above to recalculate the route and transfer it back to the device

Track Recorded on Device With Non-Routable Map Then Converted to Route

If you recorded a track on a device that does not have a routable map (such as the TOPO U.S. 100K), and then you convert that track into a route, you may encounter this error.

While the function to convert a track to a route is available in BaseCamp software, it is more beneficial with Automotive products rather than Outdoor handhelds.

If the intention is to follow the exact path traveled in the future on an Outdoor Handheld, there is no need to convert the track into a route, it is best to navigate the track instead. The steps for this can vary, but tracks are usually found in the Track Manager or Saved Tracks on the device's Main Menu.

If you prefer to use a route in the future, you can create a route in our BaseCamp program and have it follow along the track. You would just want to back up the track to BaseCamp data, then create the route. For steps, see Backing up, Viewing, and Transferring Data Using Garmin BaseCamp and Route Creation - BaseCamp™ for Windows or Route Creation - BaseCamp™ for Mac
