Voice Command Isn't Working on an Automotive Device
When attempting to use the Voice Command feature on your compatible device, you may see a message that indicates that it is unavailable for your chosen language (e.g., "Voice Command support is not available for American English"). This can be caused by an incorrect map region, incorrect language settings, or a missing file.
Check map region
Voice Command will only function when full coverage of a device's preloaded map is installed. See the owner's manual of your device for instructions to view the myMaps screen and check the installed map coverage.
Voice Command will not work in the following situations:
- A smaller region of mapping was loaded to the device during a map update
- Re-run the update through Garmin Express and ensure that full coverage is installed on your device. For instructions see FAQ Reinstall or Change Map on an Automotive Device
- Mapping files may have become corrupted. If full coverage of mapping is already installed, reinstall the maps with Garmin Express. For instructions see Reinstall or Change Map on an Automotive Device
- Voice Command is used in a region which was not preloaded on the device
- For example, a North American device is preloaded with the mapping of North America. European mapping can be added and used with this device, but Voice Command will only function with the North American mapping.
- A smaller region of mapping was loaded to the device during a map update
Check voice and text language
Verify that your device's voice and text languages are both set to a compatible text-to-speech language. Only certain voice and text languages are compatible with Voice Command. For a list of compatible languages see FAQ Voice Languages that are Compatible with Voice-Activated Navigation
For instructions on changing the language settings, see your device's owner's manual.
Restore the speech recognition file
A file is preloaded on your device which helps Voice Command operate properly. Restoring this file can help resolve issues with the Voice Command feature.
To restore the speech recognition file:
1. Install and run Garmin Express
- For instructions see How Do I Install Garmin Express?
2. Connect the device to the computer with a USB cable
mini USB micro USB Laptop Desktop
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your device (if prompted), or select your previously saved device
4. Click Tools & Content
5. Click the Utilities tab
6. Expand Language Files under Optional Updates
7. Select the desired language(s)
8. Click Install Now
The download will start automatically. When the download completes, an "updates complete" message will appear near the top of the Garmin Express window.
