Garmin Installation and Troubleshooting Mercury SmartCraft Connect Gateway

On a compatible Garmin chartplotter, Mercury engine monitoring and other features can be achieved with the use of a Mercury adapter called the SmartCraft Connect Gateway.

Mercury SmartCraft Gateway

Utilization of this gateway provides a new Mercury VesselView Gauge Page that resembles the UI of a Mercury display. Before configuring engine data on a Garmin chartplotter, the Mercury SmartCraft Manager App must be downloaded to register and configure engine(s). Please consult with a Mercury Dealer if assistance is needed with the app.

The VesselView Page provides monitoring of up to four engines simultaneously, providing engine performance data such as RPM, Speed, Fuel Flow, Temperature, Trim, and more. The fuel capacity can be configured per tank, the tank level can be updated when the tanks are filled, gauge limits can be changed, and gauge rated limits (red warning zones) through the existing Garmin engine page can also be changed.

Obtaining the appropriate Mercury SmartCraft Connect Gateway

Installation of the Mercury SmartCraft Connect Gateway

The SmartCraft Connect Gateway module has two connectors.

  1. Connect the SmartCraft Connect module (c) to the Mercury SmartCraft Junction box (e)

NOTE: If all junction box connections are full, it is possible for multiple junction boxes (Mercury part number 878492K14) to be daisy-chained together in order to meet connection needs.  Additional Junction boxes will need to be sourced from a Mercury Dealer

  2. The other connector from the SmartCraft Connect module (c) goes to the NMEA 2000 network

Every vessel is different, refer to an authorized Mercury dealer or installer to assist with vessel specific configuration.

Alarms and Faults displayed on a Compatible Garmin Chartplotter

When alarms or faults populate on the VesselView page, the Alarms and Faults messages are color-coded alarms and icons that prioritize alarm messages by severity.

  • "Red" is a hazard that requires immediate attention to avoid severe personal injury or death

  • "Yellow" is a hazard or unsafe practice which could result in minor personal injury or product damage

1.  Document the Alarm or Fault

    • Select OK

    • To view the message follow this path: Home > Info > Warning Manager

    • Select the message

    • Select Review

    • Read the information and take appropriate action

2.  Users can save the Warning and Alarm message to an SD memory card

    • Insert a micro/SD card into the chartplotter

    • Select Home > Info > Warning Manager > Save to Card, then follow the prompts

Missing Mercury information on a Compatible Garmin chartplotter
  1. Check the NMEA 2000 device list to see if the Mercury SmartCraft Gateway module is showing up on the device list

    • On the chartplotter, select Home < Settings > Communication > NMEA 2000 Setup > Device List

    • If the gateway is not showing up on the NMEA 2000 device list, then it is not communicating with the chartplotter

    • The NMEA 2000 network must be powered to "On"

    • Mercury engines may need to be operating, or the Mercury system needs to be energized and communicating

  2. Ensure the Garmin chartplotter is compatible

    • GPSMAP 8400 / 8600 Series (10”-24”)

    • GPSMAP 8700 Black Box

    • GPSMAP 7x3 / 9x3 / 12x3 Series

    • GPSMAP 10x2 / 12x2 Series

    • GPSMAP 7x2 / 9x2 / 12x2 Plus Series

    • GPSMAP 7x2 / 9x2 / 12x2 Series

    • ECHOMAP Ultra Series 10x / 12x

    • ECHOMAP UHD 7x / 9x

  3. Ensure the chartplotter has the most current software version

    • On the chartplotter select Home > Settings > System > System Information > Software Information

    • See

  4. Troubleshoot the NMEA 2000 network

    • Ensure the NMEA 2000 drop cable from the chartplotter is secure on the port and on the NMEA 2000 network "T"

    • Ensure Mercury SmartCraft Connect Gateway module is secured and operational

    • Ensure the NMEA 2000 network has adequate power (See Additional Troubleshooting below)

  5. Refer to an authorized Mercury dealer or installer to isolate the Mercury system and components
