Using a 64GB memory card in a Monterra

While Monterra does support 64 gigabyte (GB) microSD cards, it does not support the exFAT file system. A file system controls how data is stored and retrieved from media. The “SD” in microSD stands for “Secure Digital”. It is an industry standard for memory cards.

This industry standard determines which file system is used on a card:

  • 32 GB cards come in the Secured Digital High Capacity (SDHC) format, which uses the FAT32 file system, and it is natively supported by Monterra
  • 64 GB cards come in the Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) format, which uses the exFAT file system, and it is not natively supported by Monterra

To use a 32 GB card in Monterra, insert the card for immediate use.

To use a microSD SDXC 64 GB card in Monterra:

  1. If using Windows XP or VISTA, a patch may need to be installed for exFAT support from www.Microsoft.com
  2. Insert microSD card into card reader
  3. If card appears as unformatted or below 32 GB in size:
    1. Ensure the card reader you are using supports 64 GB cards
    2. If your card does not support 64 GB cards, locate a card reader that does
  4. Format the 64 GB card (with a 3rd party formatting utility) to FAT32*
  5. Eject the card from the computer
  6. Insert the card in Monterra

Now that the card has been formatted with the FAT32 file system, it should function properly in Monterra.

* FAT 32 is not the standard for 64 GB microSD SDXC cards. It is possible that formatting these cards with this file system may cause instability. Garmin cannot suggest a 3rd party program for this process as we cannot control the quality or content of 3rd party products. A search online for “How can I format my 64GB card to FAT32?” will provide many options to consider.
