Garmin GHP Autopilot Display (GHC) Warnings

When using an Autopilot, there are a few warnings that can appear. These conditions result in an on-screen message, but normal function continues, and no restart is required.

The common warning banners you may see are:

  • Connection with Autopilot Lost - The user will not be able to use the autopilot until the connection is re-established. This can be an issue with the NMEA 2000 link between the GHC and the CCU, but more often it is a sign that the CCU has locked up or shut down

  • Lost GPS Data - This indicates that the GPS data is lost while the autopilot is in a GPS pattern or route

  • Lost Tachometer - This occurs if the autopilot loses the tachometer information while the autopilot is engaged. Ensure software is current and set GPS as the speed source to resolve this

  • ECU Voltage is Low - The ECU input has dropped below 10 volts for 6 seconds. The root cause is typically insufficient power leading to a drop in input voltage under heavy loading. A sustained heavy load could also cause internal current protection in the ECU to trip

  • Exceeding Maximum Turn Rate - The turn rate of the boat is faster than the measurable range of the GHP 10 Gyro. Unless the boat is turning sharply at extreme speed, this likely indicates that the CCU is not securely fastened in its bracket

  • Hydraulic Pump Stall - This warning will appear on the title bar of the main page, along with a chirp of the beeper, if the rudder has reached the hydraulic stop and the vessel cannot turn any sharper. This message is expected occasionally, especially at low speeds. If the rudder reaches the stops frequently during typical operation, the acceleration limiter can be increased, and/or sharp turn maneuvers at lower speeds should be avoided. If the message appears when the rudder is not at the stop, it indicates an issue with excessive hydraulic loads
