Troubleshooting Radar Features of the Approach R10

The Approach® R10 launch monitor uses radar to analyze several metrics like your club path, launch angle, ball speed, and estimated distances and direction. The below adjustments can be made when the metrics appear inaccurate.

Check Radar Alignment

If you are not getting accurate readings from the Approach R10, the placement of the device behind the ball may need to be adjusted. Ensure the device is between 6 feet (1.8 m) to 8 feet (2.4 m) behind the ball.

Correct Approach R10 Placement

Swing Metrics Are Inaccurate

If the device is misaligned, your swing metrics while using the golf simulator features will not be accurate. For example, if the alignment is off by several degrees, the metrics will also be off by several degrees. Here are some steps to try.
  1. Hit a short, straight shot using a high loft club, such as a sand wedge.

  2. Compare the shot to the ball launch direction in the Garmin Golf app.

  3. If the device is misaligned, the ball launch direction in the app will not match your shot. For example, if the device is facing too far to the left of your target line, the launch direction shown in the app will be farther right than your shot.

  4. Adjust the alignment of the device as needed.

  5. Repeat this process until the ball launch direction in the app matches your shot.

Shots Are Inaccurate or Not Being Detected Indoors

Indoor usage of the device can be affected by different factors than outdoor usage.
  • The tee/ball location must be at least 8 ft. (2.4 m) away from the net when playing indoors. This allows for enough launch angle on shots to be properly measured.

  • Metal and concrete objects can affect the radar detecting shots. Other than keeping it at the 8 ft. distance away from the poles on nets, it is ideal to keep other objects away from the device and hitting surface.

  • Appliances such as heaters and fans can affect the accuracy of the radar or prevent shots from being detected.

  • If you are using a golf mat, make sure the bottom edge of the device sits above the mat.

  • The weather data is pulled from your location outdoors and will affect distances if the temperature outside is well below the indoor temperature. When starting a Driving Range session, adjust the temperature by selecting Weather Conditions before you start playing.

Chip Shots Are Not Being Detected

The length and speed of your backswing may affect the device’s ability to detect your chip shot. If the device is not detecting your chip shot, you may need to prolong or accelerate your backswing.
  1. While observing the status LED, take a practice swing.

  2. If the status LED turns red, it is detecting your shot.

  3. If necessary, take a practice swing at a different length or speed.

  4. Repeat this process until the status LED turns red.

My Device Is Tipped Too Far

If an error message appears in the Garmin Golf app indicating your device is tipped too far, you can try these tips.
  • Verify the tripod mount is properly installed on the device.

  • Move the device to a more level surface.

  • Move the device to a more stable surface.

  • Move the device to a surface that is more in line with the ball.

Ball and Club Head Speed Is Too High or Low

Golf speed units can be changed in the Garmin Golf app. In the data fields during a driving range session, you can see the units that it is currently set to. The example is set to kilometers per hour (km/h).

You can change the units in the settings of the Garmin Golf app.
  1. Open the Garmin Golf app.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select System of Measurement.

  4. Select Golf Speed Units.

  5. Select desired units.

Still Experiencing Inaccurate Data?

If you are still experiencing inaccurate data, a calibration maybe required. Here are some instances in which a calibration is needed:
  • If your distance and launch angle are consistently inaccurate, calibrate.

  • Calibrate when all of the above suggestions have not resolved your consistently inaccurate data.

To perform a calibration, you must be on the latest software version. This is installed automatically through the Garmin Golf app, but if you are missing the calibration in the menu below, you can use Garmin Express to update the Approach R10. See - Update Golf Courses and Device Software on an Approach.
  1. Open the Garmin Golf app.

  2. Select Profile.

  3. Select My Devices.

  4. Select your Approach R10.

  5. Select Device Calibration.
    NOTE:
A calibration needs to be done with the Approach R10 on a level surface measured by a leveling tool. Common floors and tables are not always level. If the calibration is done improperly, the calibration could fail or make the Approach R10 less accurate.

  6. Select Calibrate.

  7. Select Done.
